Using a Thai Banking App in Laos

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

Quick question for those who've been to Laos recently, or if anyone has the latest info:

Can I use my Thai banking app (like Krungsri, Bangkok Bank, KBank, or Krungthai NEXT) to scan QR codes and pay for things in Laos?

I'm thinking about shops, restaurants, general bills – the usual stuff. It would be super convenient to avoid carrying too much cash or dealing with currency exchange if I can just scan and pay.

Any insights or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot!

Mrs.T pays for her booze using the QR payment thingy via BKKB in Laos..:drunk:

Well some the of the better places in a bigger city take Apple Pay and im guessing Android Pay, a few of the places we ate at and my hotel took it.

They happily take US cash and Thai Baht, and give you change in there currency, (strange how they collect it but wont return it)  with a poorer exchange rate, when doing the maths.

You'll need to check with each of your banks if they support "cross-border QR code payments" in Laos.

Chances are that some will and others don't (yet). For example, in Vietnam I could already use my Bangkok Bank app for QR code payments, but not my Kasikorn Bank app.
