Thai Deputy PM Phumtham Reassures Nation: No Coup Plans Amid Political Tensions

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai addressed the nation today, firmly stating that military leaders have no intention of staging a coup d’état. This statement comes in response to recent speculation fueled by remarks made during a national unity rally at Bangkok's Victory Monument.

Phumtham emphasised that the heads of the four armed forces are united in their focus on tackling the country's current challenges, not engaging in political upheaval. "The armed forces are committed to supporting the nation through this crisis, not exacerbating it with a coup," he affirmed.

He also criticised the rally organisers for their irresponsible rhetoric, especially given that many leaders involved are currently facing legal proceedings. Phumtham warned against employing outdated tactics that have previously led to significant instability and prolonged suffering for the country. "Attempting to replicate past mistakes will only lead to more legal trouble," he noted.

The conversation turned to Mr. Sonthi Limthongkul, a former leader of the People’s Alliance for Democracy, who recently spoke at the rally. Sonthi had boasted about his role in the past political change that saw the removal of then-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the father of current Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Phumtham was quick to downplay any comparisons, asserting, "These are different times and different circumstances. The methods used then are not applicable now."

Phumtham concluded by stressing the country's commitment to solving its issues through the current political process. "We are already working through established channels to address various problems," he reassured, urging the public to place their trust in the ongoing processes rather than entertain disruptive ideas.

This statement seeks to calm tensions and reaffirm the government's stance in the face of heightened political activity, ensuring that efforts remain focused on progress and stability.

So it seems in Thailand the military always let the guys they're going to overthrow the latest plans on an upcoming coup - - isn't that sweet of them keeping them updated with their current plans.

If you believe him I would like to sell you a bridge in Bangkok going cheay

I don't think the army would publish their plans in the Bangkok Post.

The military always reassure there will be no coup right before a coup.

especially given that many leaders involved are currently facing legal proceedings.

And he does not see a problem with this?

He wouldn't know before any of us. The military leaders will inform the public directly, as they've always done; they wouldn't use the defence minister as their mouthpiece (or ask for his blessing first).

The denials have started.  Popcorn time!

This guy isn't military. Never has been, either.

Now when the military say's it ain't gonna happen, then all bets are off.

Never said he was.

Betting is illegal in Thailand. Therefore the bets are already off.

No plans? Planning has never been the strong suite no matter who is in power, or out of it, come to think of it... 🙂

I never suggested that you said he was. I was just queueing my subsequent comment.

How do you define what is "illegal" in Thailand, the Land of Smiles the Bung?

The law would be a good place to start.

Hmm... not quite there yet, are we?

Maybe my question should be, how do you define "the law" here in the Land of Smiles the Cake Box?

Must dash, the moobahn "numbers" game is on.

Broadly speaking, I would define it as a system of rules, established by government and enforced through social institutions.

May I recommend a beginners course on Jurisprudence. They are quite inexpensive now. As is googling the meaning of Jurisprudence.

But... here, in Thailand.

THAILAND.

A good indication of an upcoming coup is the subtle movement of troops and armoured vehicles. I happened to be in Mae Sot when Taksin was ousted and the masses of troops there were getting ready to close the border. Keep your eyes open for unusual happenings.

So basically he is saying the army is involved in Thai politics.

Meaning the army is still running this country behind the scenes.

Waiting ,for the right time to pounce.

Seeing as non of them can lie straight in bed, it would seem a coup is definitely on then. 😂

The PM suggested that the local general acted without orders, That insult must be avenged.
