‘The Trump Effect’: Border Crossings Hit Record Low Amid Tough Immigration Stance

Illegal border crossings have dropped to the lowest level in recorded U.S. history, with just 6,070 migrants apprehended at the southern border in June, according to former Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tom Homan. Writing on X Tuesday, Homan credited the dramatic decline to what he called “the Trump effect,” citing President Trump’s aggressive deportation strategy and zero-release policy as central to the shift.

“President Trump has created the most secure border in the history of the nation and the data proves it. We have never seen numbers this low. Never,” Homan declared. He emphasized that none of the migrants caught last month were released into the U.S., a break from previous policies under the Biden administration.

The significant downturn follows months of escalating enforcement, including mass deportations and interior immigration crackdowns, which Homan said have successfully dissuaded potential migrants from attempting illegal entry. “God bless the men and women of the US Border Patrol and God bless the men and women of ICE. The interior arrests and consequences help to drive down illegal immigration. The TRUMP EFFECT keeps America winning,” he wrote.

The numbers reflect a sharp reversal from border activity under President Biden. In a pointed comparison, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott noted that more migrants were apprehended during the first two days of June 2024 — over 7,000 — than in all of June under the current policy. On Saturday alone, only 137 migrants were caught crossing the border.

“That is less than a single day under Biden,” Homan said. “As a matter of fact, the total number of encounters is less than half of a single day under Biden on many days. Also, none of the 6,070 were released into the U.S. ZERO.”

The decline is particularly stark when compared to previous years. In June 2024, over 83,000 migrants crossed the southern border. That number climbed to 99,000 in June 2023 and reached approximately 192,000 in June 2022, highlighting a consistent downward trend since Trump’s reimplementation of stricter immigration measures earlier this year.

Trump’s first notable benchmark came in February when just 8,347 migrants crossed the border, according to federal data. The June numbers now represent an all-time low since modern tracking began.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also praised the administration’s approach in a statement posted to X on Wednesday. “The world is hearing our message: the border is closed to law breakers. Under President Trump, our Border Patrol agents are empowered to do their job once again, secure our border, and protect the American people,” she wrote.

With the 2024 election looming and immigration remaining a top issue for voters, the Trump administration appears determined to frame its approach as both effective and uncompromising. Whether the drop in crossings is sustainable over the long term remains to be seen, but for now, the administration is claiming victory in its fight to control the southern border.

Well done to Trump and the rest of those involved in this success.

I read somewhere that many southern state farmers are struggling to find staff to harvest crops and be manual labour on those farms.  I hope there's a legal route that can be developed for temporary workers to head north to earn some money, pay some taxes and help those farm be successful.

Correct.  That is the BS reason used worldwide by corporate greedies to justify using cheap illegal labor instead of hiring locals. Besides the illegals take cash and pay no taxes, and the farmers pay no insurance costs either.  Did anyone else note that those who died in that Bangkok collapse were mainly non-Thais? Has the building construction company owners been charged for hiring illegals??

Not true everywhere, but I get your point, greedies everywhere will always try to bypass the law if they think they can get away with it or if the penalties are no deterrent.

Where I am there's a process to go through to be allowed to hire foreign workers, and reputable companies follow those rules.  If the immigration authorities see that proper effort has been made but nobody could be found (or the locals could not be bothered to apply) then they'll allow foreign hires on a time-limited employment visa.

Maybe where you are employers are allowed to bypass making a proper effort to hire locals, or a blind eye gets turned?  I think that's what's been happening on farms?  Those farm owners should be fined and jailed for hiring illegals.  It's not that difficult to enforce, and I'd have thought the current US administration has the drive to be good at it.

Where I am some companies, most often restaurants, use illegals too, but those are undocumented workers and the police/immigration are always chasing after those people/companies.  Max sentence here is 10 years in jail for hiring illegals, and up to 65k USD fine.  Workers get fined up to 5.5k USD, and can get jailed but they normally just get deported after the fine is paid.  Also, if a local here thinks they are being bypassed in favour of a foreign worker they can complain and it'll get investigated.

Just recently was hearing that Trump is going to allow farmers to vouch for migrants (even if undocumented) to be able to stay and work on the farm.  He (Trump) was referring to the farmers in Iowa but (I'm guessing) should probably be extended to other areas.  They (government) are working on the details as per Trump.

Great job. Just goes to show, all it took was the will to do it and a functioning mind. Biden lacked both.

I hope 2 Tier Keir is watching.

Apparently, since February, border crossings from Canada to the US are down by more than 40%, per month, year-on-year. This news report is from this week. This is just one example of one major border crossing to the major US West Coast highway (I-5). But it's not just Canadians deciding not to travel to USA it's happening with Europeans too. They've read the news reports in recent months about their compatriots being detained for two weeks in ICE immigration detention centers - often with no reason given - then deported. So it's fear of lawless/unbridled US border officials and a general xenaphobia in the United States being drummed up by Trump's weirdo cabinet.

Easy for you to say.

A lot of your hotels, airlines and tourist businesses do. Or at least taking their money. I bet they wish they were coming now.

Amazing

A thread about Trump has only garnered 22 comments in over 24 hours.

Must be some sort of record.

Just like the record number of illegals reportedly fleeing the US and the  record fall in number  of illegals trying to get into the US.

I worked for $10 a day on a farm in the "bleeding" heat.

Yeah, a lot of rich people are not happy about it.

It could just be that Canadians and Europeans do not have as much disposable income as they did. I think Canada's unemployment is up about 10% over last year, and their dollar was off almost 12% against ours YOY.

You mean like Canadians and Europeans enjoy - but in reality - couldn't give a sh!t if Americans visit their countries? Well, ok, yeah.

Unfortunately you are believing the lies and distortions that companies employ and government Depts use to justify their own existence.   I worked for many and was the boss many times - any Government imposed 'system' is usually easily circumvented. Example - Yes I advertised the position for weeks and no one applied. They rarely ask for proof - but when they do - here are copies of the ads.  There is no 'rule' about how a company must advertise a position or where or when.  Sorry - but that 'system' is easily overcome.

The only answer is to crucify any company and owners that employ illegals - and deport all illegals and ban them for life - period.  When that is in place - implement a real system whereby companies can support/sponsor temporary employees (green cards) quickly - but make them pay a refundable bond and make them accountable if the employee disappears (they lose the bond plus get a fine).
