Chatting to one of my young (10 years) online Chinese students today, and he explained that he had just returned from a holiday to the UK.  He said that he visited London and that was nice, but he also went to 'Eedinberg'.  "Where?" I asked, and finally had to get him to spell it out "Edinburgh!"

"That was very scary" he said.  "I was scared, my brother was scared and my parents were scared!"

"Why?"

"There were many men in the street shouting and hitting the walls of the shops, or lying on the pavement.  They shouted at us and other people for no reason.  They were like mad people!!"

And so there you have it.  Give Scotland a miss 'cos it seems to be full of shouty, scary people....

Racist nonsense thars nowt scary aboot them

Their Golf courses are great.

You do know Trump owns a golf course in Scotland?

It would be totally remiss of me to allow a topic to slip by without someone shoehorning in a Trump reference.

Sounds like Scotland alright.

You can't judge all Scottish people based on those that are left in the Old Country.

  • 3 months later...

I wouldn't say they are scary, per se.

I am only half Scottish on my father's side, but I would say some of the people in my extended family up there are a little rough around the edges, but genuinely good people.

Some other cultures act nice, but in reality not so much.

Wild haggis can never be truly domesticated and remain dangerous at all times.

So that's what a haggis looks like?

Never even bothered to look it up.

I may be a potato eater, but I don't eat fat out of a sheep's a**shole.

I always found the Scots placid people

In the  1980's   most "screws" in Australia were of Scottish origin as they were the only ones able to handle Australian prisoners and get working visas , all their first names were Jock

I was a trainee prison officer at the time

The job wasn't for me only lasted a few months

I remember the "milk truck" came on one day...that's the truck  with new prisoners in...

I was assigned with an older prison officer Jock tough old scot guy

I never forget his words to one prisoner in his Scottish accent

"Get ya fookin knickers off Lassie !

And Bend over part ya cheeks show us ya sunshine lassie !

How times change ,these were tough Scots  blokes in Australia back then .most would be dead by now I guess

The prison officers  from Ireland couldn't handle their tempers unlike the Scots officers who were placid

I remember one senior prison officer in Sydney Patrick Armstrong retired back to Scotland after 25 years service in a Sydney jail as he was scared someone would recognise him in Australia

OP's student should have studied Scottish before visiting:
