A few days ago I saw a post in my Facebook news feed saying that 7-11 memberships are now available to foreigners.  While it was a 3rd party post, it had an authentic look to it, and I said to myself "What would anyone stand to gain from posting this, if it isn't true ?"  I went to my nearest 7-11 (where I am known), and spoke to the co-owner.  She gave me a "mai dai !".  That was not completely unexpected.  I contacted 7-11 on Facebook.  The person who replied said I could get it, provided I have a Thai phone number. (Thai ID card not required)  After I told them what had happened, they said they would get back to me, but they haven't.

Obviously, I can't go in to a 7-11, run around the counter, and seize the keyboard to try and do it myself.  Has anyone succeeded in doing this, particularly in Bangkok ?  I spend enough there that it would probably be worthwhile to travel (within reason) to get this accomplished.

Christ if I had to be concerned about discount points at 7-11 I'd have bigger worries.

Especially if it takes extra time each time I give them my phone number (with the inherent language issues), all to save a few satang on a future purchase or qualify get some free junk I wasn't even looking for.

I will admit that I was popular around the office when it was time to dispose of the "free stuff stamps" they used to give out.  My co-workers loved them.  But I didn't have to be a member to get them.

I have 7 Eleven membership, about a year, I don't bother with the points, too much effort for nothing, I'll probably use it if i want something which is specifically cheaper for members. 7 Eleven shops haven't got a clue, apply online

Can't be bothered with membership points. Same with BIG C & Villa. I can look for discounts myself on the shelves.

If a regular shopper at Villa & HomePro, they do add up fast, for cash back.   But agree, I can't be bothered with other memberships.  Even VM that a never use, and I think I trashed it.  The one member card in Udon Thani I had, gave us a medium size frig, which we still use.  Did spend a couple 100 thousand baht there, when building house #2.

7-11 gives out the 1 baht coupons, and that's enough.  I just give to the wife, as I don't bother with them.  She leaves in the car till she gets about 10 or 20, as we do hit 7-11 quite a bit when O&A.

I don't want any apps, or be bother with constant ads or notifications.

The one member card

Beware!

If you buy at TOPS and see a discount on a product, you will get this only with the membership (aka registered phone number). Otherwise regular price.

Saves me a significant amount over the year.

At BigC I sometime save some xxx Baht on points build up. Have no clue

Discounts apply with and without membership.

Makro and Lotus's more or less worthless.

At Makro you get some cheapish stuff after a five digit amount build up (might be 20k or 30k).

Lotus very little purchase.

Never bothered about 7/11 although now proud owner of a TrueMoney wallet  (quite handy for small purchases at many shops/services).

You can apply for membership at Boots. Can be worth it depending what medication you buy at Boots.

I don't bother with any memberships as life is too short.

Makro is only chain supermarket we shop at.  No Big C or Tops here, and the Big C the worst of the 4   Our local Lotus's is one of the worse I've ever been in.  Only go there since that's where Pizza Co. & Swensen's are located.

Don't bother with local KFC, save that fine dining when O&A, if other options are limited.  Did have BK membership with use to indulge, as get free Whopper Jr in the month of you birthday, but closest one is 100 kms away, so rare I bother with them.  Couple times a year, if O&A.

Only have Makro & Swensen's (2 for 1 scoops Tuesday) cards, and some say, don't even need a Makro card, but out local one still askes for.

Never been to Makro, but Big C and Tops seem good to me. What do you expect from a supermarket? Topless cashiers?

And they have different products, so might be worth going to more than one.

Makro is easily 10-20% cheaper than the other chains.  When I had the choice of all 4 & VM in Udon Thani, we still did 95% of our shopping at Makro.

They have very little that I need.  Not into any overpriced processed western, or even most processed Thai food items.  More a whole foods, make at home from scratch kind of guy, family.

I have 7-Eleven membership but too much effort for the small value purchases I make there. I only use TOPS and Villa Market memberships because what I spend there in a year is 50X what I spend at 7-Elevens.

I signed up about half a year ago. You can type your phone number in on the keypad to gain points. Note though, that you do not get any points for buying alcohol. Regarding the points, I have no idea what I can do with them. The main reason I became a member to be honest was so I could use their delivery service.

"...spoke to the co-owner."

7/11 is a franchise operation.

The only 'owner' of 7/11 is the parent company in Japan.

I have asked and tried but they insist that a Thai ID number must be installed. Since we as foreigners do not possess a Thai ID, this is not possible.

You get a Thai ID when you take the trouble to acquire the pink card. Apparently it also is the Thai tax number.

A fair bit of paperwork, it has paid off a few times.

There are morons on ASEAN who enjoy posting them, irrespective of the content of the post.

I suppose a medium-sized fck is better than a small fck.

Because the owner/co-owner of the local 7-Eleven franchise is the franchise (shop) owner/co-owner and, therefore, the owner/co-owner of that business.  No one claimed to be the owner of the 7-Eleven brand in Thailand or Japan.

There are also morons on ASEAN who enjoy posting daft claims that justify "Thumbs down" reactions

Only by virtue of buying a franchise, the privately-owned shops are privately owned by CP.
