Thousands of refugees have fled into India’s northeastern state of Mizoram following violent clashes between rival anti-junta groups in Myanmar’s Chin State, Indian officials confirmed on Monday.

The latest wave of displacement began on 2 July, when intense fighting broke out between the Chin National Defence Force (CNDF) and the Chinland Defence Force-Hualngoram (CDF-H). Both groups, which oppose Myanmar’s military junta, are now locked in a struggle for control of strategic areas along the country’s northwest.

As the violence intensified and edged closer to the Indian border, around 4,000 civilians—mostly from Chin communities—crossed into Mizoram seeking safety. Local authorities have registered nearly 4,000 people in the border villages of Zokhawthar and Saikhumphai in Champhai district, though the number continues to fluctuate.

Mizoram’s interior minister, K Sapdanga, acknowledged the influx, estimating at least 3,000 arrivals. “The fighting is beyond our control. People have come in and on humanitarian grounds, we have to provide drinking water, food and shelter,” he told Reuters.

The state, which shares deep ethnic ties with the Chin people, has already been sheltering tens of thousands of Myanmar nationals since the 2021 military coup. This latest exodus adds further strain to Mizoram’s resources, though local officials stress their commitment to providing basic support.

No comment has yet been issued by Myanmar’s military regime.

While previous cross-border movements were driven largely by junta crackdowns, this incident underscores a new layer of instability: internal rivalries within the resistance itself.

Observers warn that such factional fighting could complicate both humanitarian responses and broader hopes for unity among anti-junta forces. For now, Mizoram’s border remains a lifeline for those caught in the crossfire.
