Crackdown on Koh Phangan: Foreigners Detained for Overstaying Visas

I'm not saying that they shouldn't be cracking down on overstay. I'm just saying that they could be focused on things that are far more important. And yet they don't.

But these guys are the Immigration department of the RTP, NOT the ordinary RTP. Their job is Immigration only, and they seem to be doing their job.

This is how to keep Thailand safe and boost tourism, go after people who are overstaying their visa.   By all means ignore human trafficking, ignored drug smuggling, ignore corrupt policemen

Of course one needs to be careful in major tourist areas, and keep one's nose clean, but I still think those areas are much safer than the majority of America and the majority of Europe.

Sorry mate, but you are only one out of millions. All most every day we see a tourist dying, robbed, mugged by multiple assailants, scammed by tuk tuk/taxi drivers, and let's not forget the average 20,000 annual road deaths, or the travel warnings from multiple governments...yes, you might be safe...many aren't/weren't/ or will be.

So some can disrespect the law? Interesting view.

Damn, again you miss the point, and take things literally...hint, go learn sarcasm.

You're missing the point. This has nothing to do with overstaying, which is the job of the immigration police🫣

Still only a 3 year ban... Then he can come back and try to break his own record.

Only if he can raise the cash to get out of the detention center, he'll be in it til he dies if he can't 😞

They both gave themselves up. Also Mr Botha was a repeat offender

You didn't even read the OP, did you?

Mr. Botha did not give himself up. He was apprehended by the police after causing a disturbance.

Be aware that some of these overstayers have a reason for going under the radar.Criminals on the run etc.

I agree. When I used to live on Samui I ran into quite a few scoundrels that were on the run from the law, it was the go-to place at that time to hide out, as the local police had no interest whatsoever.

What is important for Thai authorities, is that Thailand belongs to Thai people, who, strangely, accept all the left wing extra Conservative ways of life in Thai culture..

All cultures are the result of brainwashing, and brainwashing will make people accept so many weird things, from religions to powerful people designing ways to profit from the system, to..... immigration rules....

By all means ignore human trafficking, ignored drug smuggling, ignore corrupt policemen, ignore corrupt customs and immigration officials, ignore public and traffic safety, and ignore the dozen issues that were plaguing tourism prior to covid.

Just keep on marching backwards into tourism oblivion.

You realise that any police force in the world has different units and different divisions for different tasks, right?

I did read the OP.  I used the term “gave himself up” as he was an overstayer  and he didn’t have enough intelligence to keep a low profile. He was begging for money , annoying people and making a nuisance of himself. Drawing attention to himself which required the police to investigate, thus “ gave himself up”

Apparently it’s a term you had never heard of  used in this context.
Do you understand?

So when someone commits a crime and then gets arrested you consider that "giving themselves up" ?

Mate, I agree, you should avoid me, you can't win against an interlectually superior.

One guy with 1255 days is nothing.  America has about 18,000,000 of those criminals running around and many are probably well past that number.

They are not criminals. They are guests invited in by the dum dens! 🤪

No, he was arrested by the police. If apprehended, the ban for overstaying more than one year, is 10 years.

10 year ban, not 3.   If you are arrested by the police for overstay, it's a 5 year ban if you're under a year, and 10 year ban if over.

Well done Mr. BOTHA, as a South African I have to present myself annually to the police for a finger print sample, in order to renew my Non-Imm. "0" Visa.

Your ilk tarnish us law abiders and make ourselves more scrutinised.

I hope they kick your butt hard.

In Koh Phangan . A small island . An astonishing 1255 days 😂 , really ? Did he hide in the mangroves ? With a Bamboo straw ? The Dear Hunter ? I think the record is around 15 years in Isan and the guy needed to get deported as he he had no other way to go home .

How hard is it ??...       No one checks my Immigration records in country...

I fly in.. passport goes in the safe and I leave it there.... usually within 90 days cos I travel a lot) - but it would be just as easy to carry on with regular life here for years...    no one stops me and asks for immigration status.

I reckon I could go years without getting caught - especially if I moved away from my initially registered address...

Unless of course I pass an immigration crack-down and am then expected to prove visa status (which has never happened do me here in decades).

The South African was a threat to public safety. He was harassing people and grabbing their bags.

So in your country every foreigner can live without a visa for an unlimited time.....great🥳

In my country all they have to do is turn up on the beach in a dinghy and they will be rewarded with hotel rooms, funds etc, etc.

He drew attention to himself instead of keeping a low profile. “He gave himself up” a slang term.

zero excuses to overstay by so many months, or years when there are many visa options in Thailand for all age groups . If they can't afford a simple Visa, they should not be here in the first place

THey need to clean up all the Samui archipelago - there are dozens of foeireigners either over staying or  on illegal visas, working without permits, bribing local police etc etc Ex military are the worst to blame.

Where did you get this information?

I agree with you, but this has nothing to do with tourism.  It's much more likely to be about keeping people distracted and focussing on a "foreign threat" rather than what the people in power are doing.
