Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra arrived at Phitsanulok Mansion early morning on 11 July, to join high-level discussions with “Team Thailand” and policy advisers to the Prime Minister.

The urgent meeting was convened in response to a recent announcement by US President Donald Trump regarding new import tariffs, which include a steep 36% levy on Thai goods.

The meeting, held at the official residence in the heart of the capital, began forming from 07:00 as key ministers and advisers gathered to craft a strategic national response. Among the first to arrive were Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat and Phan Sak Winyarat, Chief Policy Adviser to the Prime Minister. Also in attendance was Jakrapob Penkair, former spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office.

Thaksin, whose role in Thai politics has resurged in recent months despite his past exile, arrived at 07:47. The session aimed to assess economic ramifications and potential retaliatory strategies in light of the US administration’s protectionist shift.

The new 36% tariff, revealed in a letter signed by President Trump and widely circulated through diplomatic channels and the media, has sparked concern across Thailand’s export sectors, particularly manufacturing and agriculture.

The meeting was held behind closed doors and no official statement has yet been released. However, insiders suggest that discussions focused on mitigating economic fallout, exploring trade diversification and leveraging ASEAN partnerships.

Thailand has a hard job on this front, as the US is obviously rightly wary of Thailand's closeness to China and its usual fence sitting trying to play both sides. Also, Thailand slaps tariffs on every imported item, it varies wildly from product to product regarding how much, but clearly Thailand will have to accept reciprical tariffs at the very least... canit have it both ways. The real thing they have to convince the US of is the origin-washing/transshipping issue, as trust is minimal on this one and much sneakiness will be employed by the Chinese to get around it... probably with the help of ASEAN countries, hence why the tariffs will be higher here, just to make sure.

There is no way Thailand gets a better deal than Vietnam (if Trump allowed that then his already shrinking credibility on tariffs would collapse utterly). And the deal Vietnam got, especially on transshipments is a no-go for Thailand's Chinese owned companies masquerading as Thai ones. Thailand is stuck. Trump needs to make an example out of someone and make it stick. Thailand may have drawn the black bean. Enjoy your Gripens RTAF.

Bad idea to sell any of these countries jets used by Nato , as likely they/information will be passed on for reverse engineering to Beijing to gain favour. Luckily for the UK that India and Beijing hate eachother, otherwise its recently stranded F-35B that got stuck at an Indian airport would be a disaster waiting to happen... even though, wonder if anyone tried to get a good look at it, even the Indians.

How much more evidence does Thailand need to prove this individual is running the country all the remaining MPs in his party including his daughter are only there to agree with what he says I was if the understanding that when he returned he had to complete a prison sentence and stay away from politics it is clear that this has not been the case !

Surely can't be the same guy that was wanted for insider-trading, doing a runner, forced to sell his football team & leave the UK as an undesirable, fake illness & seems to be beyond any law anywhere, etc. etc.

Does Thailand want to be taken seriously?

Negotiations to follow, more or less interminably. Plenty of room for Thailand to negotiate on reducing its assorted 'taxes' (however designated) on practically all imports.

Should test the collective brain cells adequately.

Itis a highly cultural issue I am surprised teh Culture minister did not sit in. Then again, daddy was there so it just meant the puppet could sleep in.

I am starting to see a comparison to the U.S. Here  between Paetong and Joe Biden  . The only difference is that it was Joe's mommy/wife that ran the show and told him what to do. LOL

Former Prime Minister?

Thaksin has the good of the country at heart! Better him than the likes of Anutin and most of the other clowns that masquerade as leaders but are mostly their for their own personal gain!!

Is he running the country?  Who is in charge in Thailand?  I have an idea who leads Cambodia, Laos, Burma and Vietnam, but cannot get my head around who is in charge over here.

They always try to lure other countries and now it hits them right in the face. They think their the leading asian country while the others laughing and take over the tourism day by day.

Get him out of these meetings immediately, the man is toxic beyond belief, he's no longer needed nor wanted, his family is now despised, and any political party that engages in any association with the man is bound to fail at this point.

They are thinking too much. Sit back, have a taco and ignore the blustering clown.
