there was a guy on here, farang in issan, or something like that, documenting his life in a small issan village. i found it fascinating, he seemed happy enough, but the low cost, basic level of life isn;t for me, not that for one moment i'd suggest money brings happiness, but is does bring a level of comfort and security.

anyway, horses for courses, depends on your expectations from life, if life in rural, poor thailand with few amenities suits you then all power to you. not for me though.

I think he is still on Facebook

Thank you for your reply, it means a lot to me

When I was there I found a small place with a great bar.

Round the corner there was amazing rocket shows every spring

And in Surin they have the Elephant round up once a year

And there is always something to do if you go looking.

Ive never been bored in Issan and I've travelled around dozens of provinces.

I met a Thai woman. She was married to a guy from UK.

She wanted to move up sticks, but the UK guy refused.

The wife compromised because she thought he might divorce her if she dragged him up there against his will.

We will never have the stats though on how many guys actually want to live in Isaan because they enjoy the lifestyle or how many have been pussy-whipped into moving out there.

Why are you on AN?

Probably to get away from the weirdo foreigners here in Pattaya.

Most of the foreigners I've met living in Isaan seem sorta normal.

Home has been living here in Pattaya for decades, I see many freaky foreigners, lately, weirdos.

I prefer to live in Pattaya, I cruise up and down the Sukhumvit regularly, lovely Thai people, lovely places to visit.

If I'm bored, I'll jump on my PCX, cruise from North Pattaya to Na Jomtien along the beach road

Pros and cons ....

pros - cheap land so it`s affordable to build a house to live in

Nice weather Oct - March , warm and dry with no wind

          relaxed lifestyle

         quiet

Cons - not much to do , particularly if a long way from the nearest town

Evenings are particularly dull - at least in Patts you can go for a walk round in the evening .

Bad air quality during the burning season .

Well, there are many retired single Westerners living in lots of different regions and places. Along the coast. On the islands. In the jungle north. Not many single retired westerners living in Isaan. Perhaps, 2 in the whole region? 😁

Only the mentally ill would actually choose to live there instead of the coast, islands or mountains. Which gives you your answer. 🙂

overly judgmental.

it's not for you, but it seems to suit some people's lifestyle.

yeah if you're single, there's not enough nightlife out there probably, so yeah then you're asking for an unbearably boring life I guess. but if you're married, it can work for some. some people prefer a quiet life.

Honestly with the exception of BKK, Pattaya and the islands, get dropped into any Thai city you wouldn't know where the heck you were, Issan or wherever they all look the same

I was single retired, for a few years, living there, 16 yrs at Udon Thani, and thought then, and still believe, it's one of the best metros in Thailand to live.  I lived 15+ kms outside the 'downtown' area, and even outside of the village / tambon.   As I preferred my undisturbed privacy with no neighbors.

There was plenty of single retirees in UT, permanently of split there time, between home country or elsewhere in TH.

There was plenty of nightlife, in UT, both catering to expats & western visitors.  But even more and better nightlife, non P4P, all around the city.   I returned to the village area for my quiet time, but went to town to get my freak on, and away from western catering places.

I had a blast.   Lots of incorrect assumption by folks in this thread, to flat out false info.

City is fine if want medium level action. If fussy or want lots of action too quiet. The daytrips in CM are far better plus more restaurants. Its better than Hua Hin for food. Markets better too. Being single would be fine. The pm levels are 50 below CM too so thats a plus but still an issue. If CR is 7.5/10, Udon is 8. More to do in city.

Udon Thani used to be an American base, so totally different, both availability of Western food and girls who speaks English.

I have met a few single around in Isaan who are teachers, and I would say each and one of them had characteristics of being little bit different mildly said.

There is many different types of westerns in Thailand, but people around my age is usually social benefits for some reasons, and most are a bit far out there. Either with alcohol and stimulants or other extreme variants of survival grips to manage a normal day, whatever that is.

Enough said, know what you doing when moving to Isaan, or maybe better said, Thailand.

Wow, truly inspiring stuff, mate. You kicked off your posting shift here at 5:30 AM today and now, nearly 200 posts later, here you are still going strong at 11:30 PM. Eighteen straight hours of relentless, but masterful word-smithing. That has to be some kind of lifetime achievement for you?

But hey, if you wrap it up now, you might just squeeze in six hours of beauty sleep before clocking back in at 5:30 AM sharp tomorrow.

Incredible how you still manage to fit in all that reading, exploring, driving, restaurant hopping and bargain hunting around Isan.

I mean, who knew a keyboard warrior could live such a rich and varied life from behind a screen in his mum's basement?

Maybe just take a break for a kangaroo burger there in Oz, just once in a while?

I was just addressing the 'social' aspect of UT, and every other town or city in the world.  These generalization of boring towns that single people can't enjoy themselves in are way off the mark.

Maybe if you're and extreme social introvert, but I've never had a problem enjoying life as a single person in any place, any size town, city that I've lived in or was close to, 15 to 30 minutes away.

That really has nothing to do with, as a couple generations ago.  In 2000 when I arrived, if born in '75' you'd be 45 yrs old, as the war ended in '75'.  60 yrs old to have any memory or influence from that time, and there was very little left from that era in 2000.

Most gals 25-40 speak English just fine.  I was 47-51 when single at Udon Thani, and easily looked 10 yrs younger, being a non smoker or sun worshiper.

A little Thai helps, but my Thai isn't nearly good enough to rely on.   So language is not a barrier.  Not being socially adventurous is the only barrier.  Most westerner did hang out at the places catering to, or offered P4P.  They missed out on the real vibrant Thai venues, and people that actually enjoyed life, instead of working their shift.

It can happen, but it can happen in the West too. Issan is not unique. You must be pretty jaded to worry about the small minority.
