The Thumbs Down Syndrome

Featured Replies

After this emoji was introduced here at AN, I found it appearing in a most surprising, confusing & irrelevant forms.

It would be great if someone with a knowledge of psychology, explain how and why this is so prevalent? Perhaps a misunderstood emoji?

How about this???....putting a thumbs down  automatically opens a text box into which you must post a response of no less than twenty words.....otherwise the forum is locked for you.

Does it bother you so much?

Next time just skip it and save a couple of seconds and grief.

And you gave it a thumbs down, oh the irony.

Yes. I got a thumbs down on the cocaine thread for a comment about being in transit between planes.

That is undoubtedly true. I got one immediate on posting a factual helpful bit of visa advice.

But it seems only a certain segment of posters get upset about them.

The only ones that are childish, petty & pathetic , are those that can't handle negative emojis.

Up to date, I have never used the thumbs down FYI. That's why I am so puzzled.

(also about instant assumptions!)

I looked at those posts, and my money is on it that it are 2 cult disciples that didn't read the post at all.

Thumbs down are now hidden from view who posts them, is a protection for those maga members.

When I give a thumbs down to a cult member, it usually disappears of it's own

Too many got their own vendetta and follow their low intelligence

Don't worry.

I read only comments and don't care about idiotic thumbs down.

I agree, they just show you what the feeling is on your post. If you can hit a thumbs up to show you agree with someone then you can hit a thumbs down to show you disagree with someone. It's that simple.

No one says "If you agree with me then you must write a full post to explain why". So why do they think you need to write a full post if you disagree? Sometimes I don't have time, or I don't want to engage, or the post is so incredibly stupid that it doesn't deserve a written reply - all fair reasons for a down vote, just as the same reasons are valid for an upvote.

I have no idea why we have so many threads about them. People need to grow thicker skins. And I stick by my comment that it always seems to be a certain political leaning segment of the forum populace who constantly get upset about them.

TBH its NOT only on negative comments, even some useful information has thumbs down.

No, I am not upset about this emoji, its just that I cant understand why something good and useful gets a thumbs down.

That was the reason I wanted an explanation for this by someone with a knowledge in psychology.

I assumed, as it popped up just as you replied and before anyone else had come to the thread.

If I was wrong then I humbly apologise for my grave error.

All these emojis are made for those who want to hide their AN identity.

They are cowards to stand to their opinion.

Nobody needs emojis.

Maybe you can remember the time there weren't any? What did you do? Writing. Easy as that

I believe they are fashioning this forum along the lines of Facebook. It was shown that the angrier you made the members, the more clicks got generated. There's no logical reason to bring it in then make it anonymous.

I won't ask where the thumb was before "thumbs down"

Is due to social insecurities and antisocial reactions.

Perhaps. It seems that a forum who’s objective trajectory was toward the positive wouldn’t have negative emojis, guess the nannies get bored, so suppose they need some action and some self reason to exist. Either that or the negative emojis option is a contradiction in of itself.

Sigmund Freud .would struggle to explain it.

It is up there with TDSyndrome and  BDSyndrome

Summed up in one word, Mentalism.

I would like to recommend that we have a Middle-Finger Emoji. There would be less confusion over its meaning, and I have the utmost confidence AN members would use it responsibly.
