Authorities in Surin province have apprehended a Cambodian man suspected of being a military spy, allegedly caught red-handed attempting to transmit strategic information to Cambodia.

The arrest was made by a local village security unit in the Panom Dong Rak district. During a routine search, officers discovered photographs and GPS coordinates believed to relate to Thai military positions. The evidence strongly suggests that the suspect was collecting intelligence for the Cambodian security services.

The man, whose name has not been released, reportedly confessed that he had entered Thailand illegally as part of a four-man team. He further admitted that his three accomplices remain at large somewhere within Thai territory.

The suspect has been handed over to Panom Dong Rak Police Station, where he is being held for further questioning in conjunction with military security officials.

Thai authorities are now conducting an urgent manhunt to locate the remaining three individuals. Security has been heightened in the border region amid escalating tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.

Authorities in Surin province have clarified that a Thai man detained on suspicion of espionage near an active border conflict zone is not a Cambodian spy, but a civilian with peaceful intentions.

The incident occurred near the Ta Muen Thom temple area, where tensions have flared in recent days due to skirmishes between Thai and Cambodian forces. A man driving a car was stopped by security officials after he was spotted acting suspiciously in the vicinity. He had set a GPS route, raising concerns among the authorities. When questioned, he claimed he was there to deliver a monk.

Given the ongoing security threats in the region and reports of Cambodian spies infiltrating the area, officials decided to detain the man for further questioning by police to rule out any potential threat.

However, a statement released on the official Facebook page of the Phanom Dong Rak District Office later confirmed the man’s identity as Mr. Sirikorn, a 50-year-old Thai national from Aranyaprathet District, Sa Kaeo Province. Authorities stated that he had no connection to any intelligence activities and that the incident was the result of a misunderstanding.

According to the statement, Mr. Sirikorn had travelled to the area with the purpose, to deliver a statue of King Taksin the Great alongside Luang Pu Wang (Phra Ajarn Surat Wijaro) from Tham Phet Phothai Hermitagein Khlong Kai Thuean Subdistrict, Khlong Hat District, Sa Kaeo Province. The statue was a symbolic gift meant to boost morale among Thai soldiers stationed at the border.

“Due to the current security situation and the presence of unfamiliar individuals in the area, officers took precautionary action to verify the man’s identity and intentions,” the district office stated. “The investigation confirmed he is a Thai citizen with no malicious intent.”

Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant but also to avoid spreading misinformation or jumping to conclusions that may lead to unnecessary panic or confusion.

It was a result of their misplaced paranoia.

Surely when they spoke to him the first thing he would have said is something along the lines of 'got yo mo'fockin hands off me I'm Thai you knuckle dragging neanderthals' 😂

Cambodian passing on GPS coordinates what a <deleted> joke. He was a Thai using his satnav for navigation. Paranoid paramilitaries running around like headless chickens. Would have been laughable if there weren't those who wanted to immediately string the poor guy up for espionage.

I would be more worried about the Cambodian spies employed by the Thai government.

But she's been suspended already, no?
