Spot on Bill. Trump is delusional to think that product from abroad can be made competitively in house.

It was pointed out many years ago by the CEO of Apple that western nations generally do not have the mindset for repetive work resulting in a higher labour cost.

One way or another US consumers will pay more.

What EU products does the average US citizen buy?

When I lived in the UK there was nothing I would buy from the EU that I couldn't buy cheaper from the USA.

Even the shipping charges from the USA to the UK were cheaper than Germany/France to the UK.

And that was when we were in the EU.

So US needs unfair tariffs to be able to compete with the EU?   I see this as a success.   US comes across as the schoolyard bully with no brains. That's how the MAGAs see themselv

  • Unfortunately for you weak girly men, nobody can rescue you from the bully. We are winning, so be at peace with it, you'll feel a lot better about yourself

  • Perhaps the US is just tired of propping up the European economies as we did after WW2.  It made sense when Europe was on its knees after the war.  But not today.  It's time for them to put on their b

I think you just contradicted yourself, if the full tariff will be paid by the American consumer, is that not a tax on the American people?

Read again.

There is zero chance the US consumer will be paying the 15% tariff. None.

EU manufacturers and US importers will be taking a haircut.

And if they don't? The US consumer will.just buy something else.

Exactly.

If the EU can sort out the differences with China that deal would bring about a whole new perspective.

The history books will show Trump tarriffs to be one of the greatest obstacles to global unity.

You can't be serious. The only global unity China wants is Chinese hegemony.

That's just Trumpist propaganda.

There is zero chance that you know that.

Shame on you.

I just bought a German shaver. Excellent! Many other things such as Italian pasta. American pasta is garbage.

It's doubtful that even Trump understands that. What would you expect from the dumbest student a prominent Wharton Business school professor ever had?

I said 'average US citizen' deliberately ...........

With the stronger euro , the US is already paying more for euro products.

Tell us who is paying the tariff, if it is not the American consumer.

If you mean the tariff will be reduced in practice, another TACO.

Trump does the biggest trade deal in history

I would think that the USMCA (July 1, 2020) was bigger for trump?

trump has not "done" any deal with the EU.

The U.S. and the EU "have struck a framework trade agreement".

Still much work to be done, and of course Congress needs to ratify it.

Companies go out of business if the cost of the haircut is more than the profit.

That's already happened with US aluminium companies, 50% tariff = 100,000 jobs lost.

Yes, some  product made in the US, with inflated cost and inferior quality.

Why does the American auto industry automatically spring to mind?

And there comes a point when every consumer says "I'm not paying that."

We all do it. It's the nature of capitalism. Trillions of individual decisions by everyone from the poorest to the richest.

"I'm not paying that." The most powerful words in capitalism.

see specifically what the EU (and indeed the UK) does in the end buy from the USA.

Haven’t you seen that the UK are buying nukes from the USA.

Maybe you should inform the Americans that you know it all better.

https://agriculture.ec.europa.eu/international/agricultural-trade/bilateral-agreements/americas_en

The United States is a major destination for several high-value EU products, such as:

  • wines and spirits
  • beer
  • chocolate
  • cheese
  • olive oil
  • fruit and vegetable preparations.

The EU is also a key market for a number of major US commodities, such as:

  • nuts (almonds walnuts, pistachios)
  • soybeans
  • animal feed
  • wheat
  • wines and spirits
  • fruit, nuts, and spices.

https://policy.trade.ec.europa.eu/eu-trade-relationships-country-and-region/countries-and-regions/united-states_en

The European Union and the United States have the world's largest bilateral trade and investment relationship, and enjoy the most integrated economic relationship in the world. Taking goods, services and investment into account, the EU and the US are each other’s largest trading partners by far.

Millions of jobs in the United States are related to EU-US trade and investment. The European Union is a reliable source of critical supplies to the United States, including medicinal ingredients and pharmaceutical products, advanced machinery and equipment, and aerospace parts and components. At the same time, the European Union is the largest buyer of the United States’ natural gas and oil, which is an important element for ensuring transatlantic energy security and to allow a shared strong response to Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.

It is Trump's intention to weaken the USD. Doing a fair job already.

USMCA is a contender. What happens now re Mexico in particular is paramount as the Chinese having been Trojan horsing via Mexico. I can see why Trump has been gunning for Mexico.

To be honest - I don't understand what's upset him about Canada.

Re Greenland - watch this space. There's a wild move proposed that if it comes off will astound members here.

Don't think average US citizens buy much of that.

I you're talking about high income Americans, then yeah, let them pay higher taxes on their snobby imports.

Seems to me all your leftie posts don't include normal citizens at all.

But you always whine about normal folk getting shafted by import taxes on French wines.

Normal folk in the US drink beer manufactured in the USA.

The fact Carney won't kiss his arse.

Now you're getting a bit desperate,

Most nuts are grown in the USA and South America.

Chocolate, Cacao, nearly all from South America.

And you think the USA doesn't grow wheat, and can't make farm machinery .... did you forget John Deere?

There's nothing that Europe makes, that America actually needs.

Who makes a beer that is water white? Stroh's.

I did not have a beer very often in America, quite underwhelming.

Oh dear Europeans will now pay 15% more for Aerosol Cheese🤔

I guess the biggest beneficiaries of Trump always chickening out are all the US business that no longer face more punitive tariffs for EU goods.

No you are getting desperate when you start denying export statistics about what the EU exports to the US posted by official sources
