Photo of my Passport: What's the worst that could happen?

Featured Replies

A couple of times now I've been asked by Cannabis sellers to take a picture of my US passport. I declined, they were cool with it, and I completed my purchase.

My understanding is that they need to do this as part of the new regulations. If they strictly enforce it, is it a bad thing to let photos of my passport be floating around?

I am never worried about it,banks, hospitals, immigration ,hotels and money exchange people all have copies of my passport.

I don't know why you mention it being a US passport,is that different?

Not so long ago immigration used old copies of passports to hand out to people to write things on the back.

Personally i am not worried about it at all.

I have photocopies of my passport and cross them like with an old fashioned crossed cheque and write on the purpose of the copy (visa, banking, purchase, postage etc).

Not sure if this is effective, but it make me feel better.

Thanks. Good point about all these other places having copies. I wasn't sure if a US passport had more information or "value" in it.

Good idea....I've had to upload mine a few times lately and been rather reticent.

I guess with photoshop you could edit it, but a scammer is likely to say CBA if they have loads of 'clean' ones.

Sometimes in cases like this I send a copy of my expired passport.

Why would immigration have lots of foreign passports --they do not keep yours when it runs out.

I'm guessing the new medical card requirement has made it difficult.

Saw this yesterday.

Not a bad offer actually. 700 baht for a gram and a certificate. But it’s not the same as going through a medically licensed clinic that issues a proper cannabis use card with the clinic’s name on it. I don't think there's any medical card involved here. The card can also be useful as extra proof that you’re a legal user. Sounds more like they just write up the script pre-signed by a clinic, put your name on it, take a photo of your passport and file it away. They also say that the normal price for a script is 500 Baht, but real clinics normally issue them for only between ฿200-฿300. It's clearly an offer targeted at tourists and neither do tourists know the real cost of things or do they care about getting the medical card. They just want the weed. Was that in Pattaya or somewhere else?
