British Expat’s Roast Hunt in Thailand Goes Viral

I have only fried sliced potatoes as were done in rural Louisiana .  Learned from my dad in the 1950's.   Slice the potatoes to about 1/4 inch thick, fry till soft inside (or your preference), put onto your plate and enjoy.

Those potatoes in the picture are sliced differently, but look like they were fried in a pan.   I was asking how they are cooked in order to find out if they are cooked the same or differently.

My Thai wife, a professional Thai cook, boils sliced potatoes, stops boiling them while they are still firm, then fries them.  Those are OK, but they don't have the same taste as those cooked the way I learned from my dad.

Okay,  Chip pan or deep-fat frier full of cooking oil, heated to correct temperature, then deep-fried till light golden brown.  Best flavour obtained with lard.  Check out some youtube videos by top chefs as to how to make (almost) Michelin star chips.

Funny old world.  Between threads about war & the struggling economy, we get a boring vlogger talking about British food. 🤷‍♂️

  • All this food looks both unhealthy and disgusting.   British simply can't live off the land and eat Thai food.   The woman doing the expose is clueless as to how unappetizing it al

  • Trouble with all you foreigners is that you wouldn't know decent food if it poked you in the eye,    Lets start with this Great British culinary classic,

When I was a poor Univ. student, can of beans 10 cents, loaf of day old bread 10 cents.  Cans of string beans, carrots, peas, potatoes, were all 10 cents a can.  I ate meat once a week.  Hamburger was 39 cents/pound.

When I were a lad I bought "bacon bits" from the grocer at 6d a bag. These were the offcut bits that got produced during the slicing of the bacon.

Cue bacon slicer joke:

I lost me job at the grocers after I was caught with my tadger in the bacon slicer .... pause for effect .... she got the sack too.

I'll get me coat.

To come back to British food and obesity I'd like to share this GIF which IMO illustrates how countries with a good food culture resisted to the invasion of junk food. US go Home.

So, you'd rather watch some middle aged, ugly git make the video?  Whatever floats your boat.

I like Thai food & British. Can't wait to have it each time I return to the UK.

Just not that interested in the vlogger.

Homesickness strikes on Sundays without a roast, but one British expat in Thailand has found solace in a surprising locale. Julia, a TikTok creator known as @awaywithjuliaa, has captured UK expats' hearts with a viral video showcasing her quest for authentic British fare abroad.

Living in Thailand hasn't dulled Julia's cravings for an English roast. In her latest TikTok adventure, she invites viewers to join her pursuit of the perfect Sunday dinner, hoping to compare it to those back home in the UK.

Setting the scene from a quaint restaurant with outdoor seating, Julia’s enthusiasm is contagious. "I’m so excited; we’ve ordered loads of food. The only reason I came here is because I’m missing England so much," she shares.

Her journey starts with a classic: fish and chunky chips, accompanied by Heinz gourmet malt vinegar. “The first dish has arrived; look at that,” she exclaims, praising the flavourful, golden chunks.

The culinary tour continues with an impressive Toad in the Hole, featuring a giant Yorkshire pudding packed with mashed potato, peas, onions, and sausages. “Wow, that looks unreal. Julia remarks, "I got the gravy, yum," as she marvels at the generous portions of the dish.

The highlight is yet another oversized Yorkshire pudding, this time filled with roast chicken, crispy roast potatoes, carrots, and cauliflower, prompting Julia to declare, “Thailand does it better than England.”

Her video, cheekily captioned, highlights the allure of Thai roasts, claiming they’re “10X better and cheaper.” With over 57,000 views and 100 comments, the clip resonates with many, including expats long deprived of their beloved Sunday rituals.

Viewers expressed their envy and anticipation. “Food looks banging for the price; have fun,” one enthused commenter noted. Another chimed in eagerly, “I’m coming in August; I can’t wait!”

Julia's culinary journey has gained significant attention on TikTok, showcasing a unique blend of cultures. For British expats, the promise of enjoying their homeland's classics in an unexpected setting offers a comforting taste of home.

Foodies intrigued by Julia's adventure might just find themselves joining the pilgrimage to Thailand, eager to sample roasts with a refreshing twist that promise both nostalgia and delight.

She needs to try Valley View Restaurant outside of Ban Chang, really popular.  Search Valley View Restaurant on Facebook, great fish and chips and plenty of English food.

If people like american products you cant convince them otherwise, pointless to whine about it here as well

Just had a look on Tripadvisor. The food looks excellent and great reviews. Will definitely pay it a visit if I'm ever in the area.

Thanks for the heads up. 👍

Well was just stating a fact. However, since that US shyte causes a massive burden for the NHS, a tariff of 300% would be just adequate, wouldn't?

Now let me get back to my red whine, aren't we all commies in the EU?

Naaaaaa  that’s for the covicts and Yanks

My Thai partner cooks the real thing from scratch - Sausage, Fish and Chip, Pork Pie, Chorizo, Bacon and Jam Doughnuts.

I'm sure she thinks the way to a mans heart is through the stomach - BUT I know different🤫

It may not matter if the Lone Star tick gets to Thailand.  People who get bitten by this tick get an allergy to animals products (red meat, leather, etc..).  That will make PETS happy.  But pretty horrific to mostly everyone else

Poor guy got bitten while hunting deer, now cannot eat red meat.

And let's not forget Louisiana which I consider to be the single darkest state in America on so many levels, and it has nothing to do with skin color.

An old friend from California lived in Bangkok. He thought that the best thing that could happen would be for Louisiana to be handed back to France.

Crazy. Why come all the way to Thailand to find and enjoy a typical UK Sunday roast?

There are plenty of cheaper, value for money Thai dishes to be enjoyed rather than a Sunday roast!

Near to where I lived in Bangkok there was a very nice German bar/restaurant. Most days it was full of mainly German people. It isn't just British people who look for home cooking when overseas (it's sometimes made out to be a peculiarly British thing, when it isn't really).

Maybe she fancied having a roast dinner.

Do you eat Burmese food for every single meal?

I currently live in Cambodia and eat Khmer food most of the time.

A UK roast dinner is not on my bucket list!
