So the job numbers for July are in and it's ugly. But the revised numbers for the previous months are horrendous.

US job growth stalls: Just 73,000 jobs added in July, with ‘stunning’ downward revisions to recent months

https://edition.cnn.com/2025/08/01/economy/us-jobs-report-july

"The US job market slowed sharply in July and was substantially weaker than first estimated for prior months, suggesting President Donald Trump’s trade policy may be stifling hiring.

The US economy added just 73,000 jobs last month, and the monthly totals for May and June were revised down by a combined 258,000 jobs.

The prior two months’ revisions were “stunning,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG, in an interview with CNN."

Even the WSJ can't find a speck of gold in this gigantic pile of poo.

WSJ: U.S. Hiring Slowed Sharply Over the Summer

https://archive.ph/Ajvj8#selection-539.0-539.42

"Revisions cut down the jobs growth originally reported for May and June by a combined 258,000. That left May as having added just 19,000 jobs and June just 14,000. A perfect storm of changes is keeping business leaders cautious. Tariffs are weighing on manufacturing.
“To see three months in a row of fewer than half of industries adding jobs is unprecedented outside of a recession,” said Wells Fargo senior economist Sarah House."

There are already two threads about it.

Probably the only thing stopping Trump from firing Jerome Powell is the threat of China and Japan abandoning US Treasury bonds.

That would be bad for everyone, especially USA.

He'll never do that but perhaps he could give himself the Nobel Peace Prize?

Surprised, why?

Musk's DOGE removed hundreds of thousands of government employees from their jobs.

Trump's tariffs have made produce more expensive, thus creating unemployment; some US companies moving operations offshore, thus creating more domestic unemployment.

What does one expect from the Trump regime, which cannot comprehend even high school economics?

What do I expect?   Chaos.

It's going to get worse after September 30, when 154,000 Federal employees and their deferred resignations are activated.

Am I the only one noticing the silence around DOGE has become deafening?

The Fed workforce number will be reflected in the unemployment rate, not the jobs number. The jobs number refers to jobs created.

If those Fed workers don't look for another job, that will be reflected in the Labor Participation Rate (LPR), and as that shrinks, the UE number becomes deceptive. Disillusioned workers who have given up looking for work are not counted as "unemployed".

The LPR under Trump peaked in Jan-Apr at 62.6%, but has now fallen to 62.2% as of July. The fall could well be due to some effects from the tariff debacle. That .4% drop actually benefits Trump's UE statistic, because none of the people represented in that .4% drop are considered "unemployed". Were they included, the UE number would not be just 4.2%, but higher.

I believe everyone that receives unemployment benefits is counted as unemployed.

The unemployment number has been deceptive for a long time.

The thing about the LPR is that it is inevitably going to go lower as times passes by. That's because it includes virtually all Americans from the age of 16 no matter how old they become. The only groups excluded are those in the armed forces, in nursing homes and such, in prisons and I think there's one other category. And since the average population is aging, the number keeps on getting lower. So this part of the decline can't be laid at President Trump's door. The rate of decline should also accelerate as the number of immigrants declines and illegals are expelled. But that's a good thing.
