When I last renewed my tax (a few months ago) a couple of speeding tickets came up on the system and I had to pay them there and then before they would renew my tax. I believe that rule may now have been rescinded but if was definitely in place, so it's pot luck I would say.

Funny all the heroes on here saying they put them in the bin, and then they probably grumble on posts about corruption here, Thais not playing by the rules etc. Hypocrites.

I have never had a fine for something I didn't do, so I pay them, they are generally only 500 baht, it's nothing. The only one that grated was a postal ticket for doing 121kmh in a 120kmh zone - no leeway at all.

Interesting. I had a car that I got two speeding tickets via speed cameras, just after the speed cameras were deployed, so they were working. It was in a different province to the one in which I lived. I renewed the tax for that car in subsequent years several times, no questions asked. Maybe because it was a different province to the speeding tickets?

Now I live in Phuket, no chance of getting a speeding ticket there, the amount of traffic does the job of limiting speed.

  • they all look the same in the trash can !

  • They have a tip option for the issuing officer    Would you like to tip 10% 15% 25% 50%

  • Is there any definitive view yet on whether non-payment of these are being tied to vehicle tax renewals?  Or does it depend on individual areas?

Don't think that could be it, my speeding ticket was also from another province - likewise I am not exactly speeding around Bangkok.

I've heard if they stop you for an offence and they write up a ticket they can't confiscate your bike if you don't have the money on you there and then, and they have to let you go. You're quite in your rights to go to the station on your bike when you have the cash and pay. And the police have no right to detain your bike if you are willing to pay the fine at a later time at a police station.  Can anyone confirm this ?

I think the first option they may give you is to let you go and hit the nearest ATM and get the cash while they keep your bike and license. I doubt that your rights extend to be allowed to drive off on a promise that you'll drop by the precinct and pay your fine, but if they do, they'll keep your license or drivers permit.

I recall years ago getting a ticket at a Jomtien traffic stop where the fine had to be paid at the Dongtan station. The cop issuing the ticket kept my license. When I paid the fine a few hours later, they couldn't find my license. It transpired that the cop hadn't dropped his bundle of seized licenses at the shop before going off shift. I got it back the next day.

I don't think this will stop driving on the wrong side, running red lights & trying to mow people down when crossing on a Zebra crossing etc, etc.

Exactly!
I will continue to drive like this (except I do not mow people down, I just swerve around them with inches to spare).

If you get a ticket are you still exempt from receiving another one within 24 hours, or are those days long gone. Eg. if you get a speeding ticket then you can basically keep speeding for the next day and not get another one if you produce the ticket to another police officer.

when we last taxed the car, they said next time all tickets will be linked and need to be paid prior to tax renewal,
this was a new thing coming , but they might have backtracked on this, so things will be same as before, you can just ignore the tickets,
but no confirmation

Already linked, 2 years ago l paying rego they said have 500baht fine outstanding, good idea, Australia ends up suspending your license for unpaid tickets
