Spain is fining a tourist $231,000 for flying a drone illegally, what fine he gets here in Thailand will seem like a discount to that amount.

Fake news.

The link doesn't even exist.

The fine for flying a drone without a permit in Spain, even in restricted areas, is a fraction of that amount.

Can't ask for money when reporters are around.

  • It looks about the size of a child's toy. And whilst I'll admit there are a number of interesting places on Walking Street, none of them could be considered legitimate military objectives.

  • It seems like the government has not made the law publicly known to tourists. Why not have signs in the airport, at baggage carousels for instance?  The police could put up flyers at hotels. It's

If he intended to fly the drone legally (notwithstanding the current ban) then it would be registered and insured.  The FEIC have emailed all their clients informing them of the new rules.

I'm registered and haven't received any notification. I heard about it on the news.

Research before saying something is "fake news".

The first petapixel link is still nonexistent.

The other is the typical fake Daily Mail sensationalist news story against Spain that we've become accustomed to.

I'm Spanish, I'm a drone pilot, I know the regulations, and the fine for flying a drone, even without a license and in restricted areas, is much lower than the one stated in the "news story."

The maximum fine for extremely serious circumstances is €225,000. Even for cases as serious as flying near an airport, it wouldn't exceed €90,000.

For these types of minor infractions, the fine ranges from €60 to €45,000.

The news story, to be even more sensationalist, mixes up all the facts and says that the tourist faces a fine for flying a drone improperly, which in Spain can reach €230,000.

Maybe you need a better computer, either way, the links work and prove you wrong. Show us otherwise, or stop trolling.

Is your registration and insurance done through the FEIC?  They have even emailed those who just made enquiries and didn't proceed any further.

PS.  The Peta Pixel link works OK for me.  It does say further down in the article that this fine is far in excess of the average.

That's because it (flying an unregistered/uninsured drone) was done during a restricted event, where only police and security were authorized to fly them. So basically the same issue here, people flying illegal and unregistered/uninsured drones during a National Emergence declaration. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse, and some countries take it seriously.

Apparently so, if originating from China.

Another case of the BIB going OTT in the LOS. :coffee1:

Isn't flying drones restricted and regulated for a decade already?
I found this:

Before You Fly: Required Documents

You need three documents to fly legally:

  • CAAT Registration (Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand)

  • NBTC Registration (National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission)

  • Drone Insurance with coverage of at least THB 1 million (~€30,000)

📋 Core Flying Rules

  • Visual Line of Sight (VLOS): Always keep your drone in sight.

  • Altitude Limit: Max height is 90 meters (295 feet).

  • Distance from People/Objects:

    • Stay 30 meters away from people, vehicles, and buildings.

    • If your drone weighs over 2 kg, keep 50 meters distance.

  • Airport Restrictions: No flying within 9 km (5.6 miles) of airports without permission.

  • No-Fly Zones: Avoid government buildings, military areas, and national parks unless you have special approval.

  • Crowds & Events: Flying over gatherings, protests, or concerts is prohibited.

  • Night Flights: Not allowed unless approved and equipped with visible lights.

🚫 Temporary Ban Alert

Due to current military tensions, drone flying is banned across Thailand until August 15, 2025. Violating this ban could result in imprisonment or fines.

First they came for the handguns, and I did not speak out—
Because I did not own a handgun.

Then they came for the drones and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a drone owner

Then they came for the porn and I did not speak out—
Because I did not watch porn.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left with guns to defend me and there was no porn in prison.

You think that someone will come and get you if you don't have  gun to stop them ?

Of course I could not possibly own a gun. Here in Thailand. That would be highly illegal.

What are you suggesting?
