Car insurance cancelled with no warning.

Featured Replies

I have had my Ford Ranger insured with the online "R" for well over 12 years and paid monthly. Never made a claim.

June payment wasn't deducted from my account & I heard nothing from them, not even an email.

Suddenly when the next payment was due they abrubtly cancelled my policy with no recourse and no I cannot reinstate it.

As I am O/S at present and it has caused a major headache as the car is company owned and under finance.

Bad luck, my fault as usual. "TIT"

12 years ago I was told that I could only get First class insurance for three years, after that it would have to be Second Class. I still have First class. What I mean is, they seem to make the rules up as they go along. You need to find an insurance broker.

Hi Bagwain,

This must be really frustrating especially as you're overseas. Can we assist at all? We work with all Thai insurers so might be able to gain some insights for you. We'll send you a private message too so you can reply there or here.

Really hope we can help you with this.

Send me a PM. I was originally using AA as I know Peter. Is he still on board?

Do they have the right to cancel your policy if a payment instalment is missed for some reason? Easy to happen if deducted from a credit card and the one on file has expired and you don't realise.

Seems like you are saying that the June payment was not deducted, for whatever reason, and then when next one was due they cancelled. IE they didn't just cancel without anything else happening, a payment was missed first. Of course they should then contact you first to say "this payment failed; your policy is at risk if you don't pay up now" etc.

And just curious - you bought a pick up 12 years ago and its still on finance! That's an impressively long payment plan.

Do you use their app? When you say cancelled with "no recourse" and cannot be reinstated suggests that you have spoken with them?

What are their published terms and conditions with regard to cancellation when using the monthly payment option?

It appears that there were TWO issues here, the first being the missed payment, which would have got my attention as it may be a bank or credit card issue, the second being the lack of any email. My recollection is you get two emails from them, the first, about 3 days before the due date advising the payment is due, and a second confirming the payment, about 3 days after the payment.

A long time ago I had First class Insurance on a new Ford Ranger, I can't remember how old the Ford was when they told me I cannot have First class Insurance anymore. I asked them so what do I do,... they replied i had to have 3rd party Insurance, within a few weeks I  had my first accident, a Thai smashed into the back of my truck, the insurace man arrived at the accident asking me to show him my documents, he asked me why i didnt have first class insurance  TOP  UP,  because i was not told about it.....I no longer have a truck, but it seems u  can buy a top up for your 3rd party  policy

The 'top-up' equates to a higher premium that reduces the insurers' exposure to higher costs (less profit). Getting parts for older cars if/when a damage claim is being addressed is one of the factors they consider.

When your insurer says your vehicle is too old for First class coverage and doesn't offer the 'top-up' method, and you have no need to buy a newer vehicle, that's the time to get in touch with a broker and seek options.

When (if?) the OP gets this figured out, I hope he'll post back and let us know what happened.

It could save some future irritation an/or heartache for others tuned in here.

There is a third.  They may have insisted on a video car inspection and the OP ignored it.  If so, the cover would not be renewed or cancelled. That request for inspection would be made by e mail, so miss it and the trouble starts.

Looking at other options. Also AA is looking at it for me.

My lawyers contacted them the day we got the cancelation notice and basically the answer was stiff 💩

Cannot reinstate, have to start again. Which I will do with another company!

I am dumb founded as to why no notification. (TIT)
