Spuds better than French Fries

Featured Replies

Guess I'll open a Spudshack franchise.

"Potatoes have long had a bad rap for being high in carbohydrates. A new study backs that concern—at least in part.

That weekly french fry habit could be setting you up for diabetes decades down the road. Research found that eating french fries just three times per week may significantly raise Type 2 diabetes risk—but surprisingly, other potato preparations showed no increased risk at all."

That potato could well be more deadly than fries.  Butter, Cheese, and sour cream add up to a calorie and cholesterol bomb. Looks good but.......🙃

Then just eat the spud. Or skip the cheese and the butter.🤔  In order to eat cheese and butter one does not need a spud.

5 minutes in the Wave = DONE!

Then put whatever you like inside it, with moderation.....baked beans, tuna (small tin though), Philly cheese, Peanut butter (home-made) and Sweet Chilli sauce = near enough Satay.

UK......they are a perfect size for baked potatoes, free of damage and discolouration, regular/uniform shape.........I guess I was expecting something very different from a nation whose staple diet is rice.

To me the Thai potatoes seem fresher and, compared to the supermarket ones in the US, have slightly more flavor.

Bought some Thai ones in Makro last week........absolutely rotten inside, soft and discoloured.

'Foreign' ones were 5 Bht a kilo more expensive, Egyptian, and lovely.

I was in the fresh produce trade for my entire working life, so I think I'm qualified to judge a spud or two!
The quality of the humble potato in Thailand varies from store to store; sadly, most are of a low standard simply because of the way they are handled and displayed, the actual potato was probably fine initially, but exposure to strong light, high temperatures and humidity soon takes its toll.
By far the best I've seen (and purchased) is in Makro, where they are not washed, only brushed, consistently of a good standard and all-around usage. Definitely on par with UK supermarket quality, albeit with a lack of variety. It would be nice if they displayed variety and the country of origin!

BTW, most of the potatoes in Thailand are sourced from China.

Thai spuds are great for baked, chips, mash, roasted, boiled plain or for potato salads, I find best ones from Macro as long as they are fresh, no green tint to the skin. I do miss Jersey Royals and Egyptian, Cypress new potatoes, and other varieties though.

I'm just beginning to think I should revise my statement to............ the potatoes my wife buys in Lotus........ I haven't been in a Thai shop for about three years.......so they could be from anywhere I guess.

My GF buys them in the local day market, no idea where they are grown. Always good quality, need a bit of washing. She makes mussuman curry.

Local market sells nice ones, but not always available.

Idaho potatoes are the best of that variety. Thai potatoes pale by comparison to those as well as the small red potatoes, Yukon Golds, Fingerlings, Russets, Kennebecs, and many others, as many as 200 varieties.  you can get in the US.

No variety of potatoes in Thailand. At least it would be nice to see some red potatoes. And some multi-colored mini potatoes would be nice , too.

I had the same problem but now I get Macro staff to cut them down the middle so I can reject any bad ones - when I get home I peel, cut, par boil and freeze them.

Personally, in the UK I eat skin on but over here I have no idea of origin or what chemicals have been sprayed on them so I don't.

Many years ago I lived in Herefordshire next to a fields of potatoes - the farmer said you want potatoes go dig them up!!

French fries are deep fried in oil and are best avoided, chips cut from potatoes with a little oil in the air fryer are great, healthy, stuff your face

Recently learned that people from certain South American countries, mostly west coast it seems,  are quite particular about potatoes. Some cookbooks do some explaining of it.  I was wondering who in the US was spending $5/lb for spuds the size of a ping-pong ball, I thought it was a foodie thing.
