Are Aussies big drinkers?

Featured Replies

Only for Assies

We all know the winecask was invented in Australia, but that does not make Aussies big drinkers. Australia is just 17th on the list of alcohol consumption in the world. Yes, I buy wine casks, but only because they are cheaper than bottles. We all know Thai wine is not wine, it is  vinegar and a bit of grape juice

The first morning on my way to St Vincent's hospital, passing the harbour, I was surprised and even shocked to see many men drinking their morning 8 oz beer.

Even some male nurses I saw drinking.

(Excellent wine for a decent price is supplied by Aldi in these days, 5 AUD up)

My observation is they are loud acoholic macho men big drinkers.

Possibly a lot of their terrible drinking habits has to do with the high rate of mental illness in Austrailia.

Trying to drink away all their problems I guess.

Many of the English convicts who were sent to Australia had mental problems and they produced off spring. So the blame for any mental conditions in Australians was most likely inherited from the once mighty Mother Country.

I often, when I was a lot younger, had a beer early in the morning. That was because I had just completed a 12 hour shift and finished 0600.

Read of this a long time ago, related to dock workers when they had to load / unload ships by hand, finish a very very long double shift of hard work 6:00 am / 8:00 am then to nearby pub for a couple of ales.

Just returned from Melbourne.
