Whilst I suppose to could call him English as he was born in England he spent his adult life in France or on Crusades,

"Though regarded as a model king during the four centuries after his death and viewed as a pious hero by his subjects, he was later perceived by historians as a ruler who treated the kingdom of England merely as a source of revenue for his armies rather than a land entrusted to his stewardship.

The lion is still a better symbol than the French chicken.

Well, can we blame him, given the chance where would you rather stay, the Med, south of France or Herne Bay?

The lion would be a better symbol for Tanzania or Uganda, you know places where lions actually live. For Britain i's a bit of deranged symbol, since there are no lions in Britain. I mean Italy doesn't have kangaroos as a symbol, Spain doesn't have the Vietnamese pot belly pig as a symbol. Botswana doesn't have the Enlish woodpecker as a symbol. If everyone did what Britain's doing it would  be a madhouse.

Not half as deranged as wales and China using mythical dragons as symbols.

So there were lions in Britain.

"Yes, there were lions in Britain, but not in recent history. During the Pleistocene epoch, which lasted from about 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago, Britain was home to a species known as the European or Eurasian cave lion (Panthera spelaea).

These lions were larger than modern African lions and roamed across much of Europe, including what is now Britain.

These lions became extinct as the climate changed and the Ice Age came to an end, leading to the disappearance of many large mammal species in Europe. By the time humans began to settle in Britain, these lions had already vanished from the region."

Amazing what a bit of education can do you.

The national flag of Wales and Bhutan has a dragon on it. So why not Lions as British symbols.

Ah, but don't forget the Labour Party's splendid promotional video featuring AI animals, including a politician character (presumably Labour) portrayed as .... a lion!

Great choice of accompanying music, too.

Council by-elections; only a few thousand vote and on local matters, so very little bearing on national politics.

Sadiq Khan easily won both his elections.  Most Londoners did not, and do not, care about his religion.

If you think Muslims don't consider whether their candidate is Muslim or not, I would say you have a very limited knowledge of Islam.

You keep telling yourself that.

1 Council, Epping Council have got the Government in tatters,  working behind the scenes on a new National Policy.

Ask the Duke of Norfolk whose family, the Howards from their Arundel estate, have been staunch Roman Catholics for centuries, sometimes in good times and sometimes in bad.The Norfolks stand slightly apart yet at the same time are deeply entwined with the British state. In fact the Duke of Norfolk has the hereditary responsibility to manage great state events like the coronation. He is generally regarded to be the leading Roman Catholic layman - as were his ancestors before him.

He would regard your primary allegiance concern as meaningless and absurd. The same applies to many Muslims and Jews.It is perfectly possible for civilized people to have multiple allegiances.Of course there are always fanatics but they don't make the rules.

It's the multiple allegiances that we are discussing and which ONE comes first.

They are just regular Londoners from different backgrounds - you know, people who actually live there.

Lol, that was 14000 years ago! And since they were a European wide lion, shouldn't the EU really have the lion as symboll? I mean since England proved to be an unhospitable environment for lions, and they actually died out there, due to the awful weather, just way too cold, surely the last thing a lion would want to see, if he ever came back would be be Britain. He'd be like "Oh no, that's that ice cold place where we all died" to his mates...

No, no, no, this doesn't make sense. Britain should get a more suitable symbol. the otter, or hedgehog or beaver, these would make a lot more sense. The lion, that's just not credible and a bit silly.

And yeah, the welsh dragon, don't get me started.

Except that's nowhere near true.  Birmingham does not have a Muslim majority population; in the 2021 census, 29.9% of residents described themselves as Muslim, while Christians made up the largest religious group at 34.0%.

Yeah, but Muslims all vote Muslim, and Christian vote will be spread over all other candidates.

I think you will find that they died out because it got to warm. So a fat lot you know. What is bit silly is you thinking that a nation should choose its symbol by what is an indigenous animal. So what if Richard the Lion Heart chose three lions and then football adopted the same symbol. That is up to the football associations. What next Jaguar Land Rover has to change its name.

I drove through my local estate this morning and so nice to see that all the lamp posts were decked out it in the UK national flag and the English national flag. See how long it is before the local council spoil sports take them down.

I think it's nice during the World Cup or Euros, I'm all for that. At all other times it feels crass to me. We don't want to end up like America where they are everywhere, it's not a good look.

Keep the flags for official buildings and wheel them out nationwide for special occasions so it still feels special.

So if France chose a kangaroo as a national symbol, Italy chose a Flamingo and Australia chose a Bengal tiger that would make perfect sense to you would it? It's stupid! That's what England is doing! There are no lions in England!

There are plenty of foxes, badgers and beavers. But no lions whatsoever! It's a total nonsense!
