In a dramatic twist, Cambodia's Senate President Hun Sen has threatened to arrest Thai leaders for invading Cambodian territory and causing the deaths of its citizens. This bold statement was made on Hun Sen’s Facebook page, responding to Thailand's legal action threats against him and his son, Prime Minister Hun Manet, over alleged fatal attacks on Thailand.

TThe situation escalated after Phumtham Wechayachai, Thailand's acting Prime Minister, announced that his government plans to pursue both criminal and civil action against the Hun family. Accusing Cambodia of using military force to jeopardise Thai sovereignty and harm its citizens, Phumtham declared, “If found in Thailand, they will be arrested immediately.”

Hun Sen retaliated swiftly, posting, “If Thailand can arrest Cambodian leaders, Cambodia could arrest Thai leaders responsible for killing our citizens.” He criticised Phumtham's diplomatic acumen, remarking that his role as acting PM would soon cease and accusing him of ignorance regarding laws and diplomacy.

Phumtham assumed the acting PM role after Thailand’s Constitutional Court suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, linked to a leaked conversation about border clashes with Hun Sen. Hun Sen questioned whether Thailand's actions aimed to restore trust or provoke further conflict, thereby jeopardising the recent ceasefire.

Further details emerged as Phumtham outlined the government's litigation strategy after a National Security Council meeting. Thai citizens and government bodies affected by the border clashes are invited to submit complaints to Provincial Police Region 3, covering regions like Si Sa Ket, Buri Ram, Surin, and Ubon Ratchathani—areas hit hard by Cambodia during the recent fighting.

This conflict saw thousands of Thai citizens displaced from their homes, reported Thai PBS World.

Phumtham clarified that Thailand intends to limit its legal actions to domestic courts and is not considering international legal proceedings against Cambodia’s leaders.

The tug-of-war between these neighbouring nations now hangs in a delicate balance, with legal and diplomatic repercussions looming on both sides.

This escalating rift underscores the fragile state of Thai-Cambodian relations as both sides brace for potential legal and political fallout.
