Visa On Arrival only gives you 15 days and is not free, but as @DrJack54 suggests, you probably mean Visa Exempt.

easy you can stay 60 days, then go to immigration and they extend for 30 days and so you are 90 days in, then you need to go outside the country with bus or plane and get another 60 days and then go again to immigration office and do it again and get anoteher 30 days...so total 6 months...and you can do it again i think

Thank you for this.  What does my S-i-L have to do to qualify for this?  Does he apply on line?  Does he ask at the airport?

How long does he want to stay in Thailand.  SIL passport country?

You do not apply for visa exempt entry. There is no charge.

The airline at departure may/will want to see onward flight.

The cost of 30 day extension is 1900b

He is from UK.  Will the IO grant him a 60 day visa exempt automatically or does he have to ask?

Granted automatically.

He won't need onward ticket or money on him for immigration at arrival Bangkok however always good to have cash.

Remind him to do TDAC up to 3 days prior to flight.

The airline at departure may require onward flight within 60 days

I am confused. I thought for visa exempt one needed both the onward ticket and money on person. (Of course it is understood that IOs do not always check.)

As already said, it will be granted automatically. But he would be strongly advised to check, prior to moving on from the IO's booth, that his passport has, indeed, been correctly stamped for the whole 60-day period. Any error would more easily be rectified there and then than subsequently.

Sometimes, bribe is sought on entry if the stay period seems "too long" for a tourist.

My English friend said it happened to him earlier this year.

He had been previously on informal education visa for 3 years.

When he sought his entry(from Lao,by air) after that visa expired, men in uniform demanded B3000-.

He paid and got visa waiver stamp on his passport.

3 months later, he joined visa run tour to Lao(by land) for B2000- or something; crossing Chiang Kong border.

He left Thailand and stayed 2nights on the other side of the Mekong River(requirements).

Then, he came back with 60-day stamp; no b3000- needed at the border point.

If you are planning to enter Thailand, after multiple no visa stays, better prepare b3000 in cash with your passport.

Man over the counter may be short of his pocket money.

More likely that the airline makes trouble when boarding without proof of onward/return travel and no visa.

They see that in their rules (TIMATIC).

I concur with that.

Before you get to Immigration, have a mental note of the date that should be stamped as your "leave by" date, bearing in mind that the days of arrival and departure are included in the 60.

At SUV Immigration in 2024, the IO stamped me in for 30 days by mistake. Before leaving the booth, I checked, smiled at him and said "I think it should be 60 days".

He actually apologised, corrected it in the passport and also stamped my boarding card as further "evidence". Needless to say, I kept everything until my eventual departure.

Does anybody know if the airlines accept a onward ticket within 90days as it is possible to extend 30days or does the onward ticket need to be within the 60days

Does, happen however bit unpredictable..

Anyone trying various plans with eg no ticket at all or one with onward within 90 days etc... is best advised to have WiFi so you can step away from check in and book a throw away ticket or Rent a Ticket..

"onwardticket.com"

It has to be within the 60 days.

Yesterday watched a vlog with a well known visa agent.

He suggest to book a cheap onward flight to throw away.

He can do through a travel agent for as low as 700 Baht.

Which flight is 700b.

We sometimes suggest throw away such as Bangkok to Saigon which is approx 1800b

Another option is rent a ticket...

"onwardticket.com" $16 usd

Doubt the account without details.

He said the man over the counter first intimidated him.

Saying that his entry can be denied as he doesn't look like a tourist, staying for prolonged period with student visa previously.

Then demanded a decision;  giving him 3000- or being turned away.

His port of entry was CNX.

What's the point of giving  bs for this topic?

I,myself, have been on a  retirement o valid for a year, for over a decade.

I am not benefited by giving false info to others.

After all, what makes you so skeptical about bribery e thing?

Is it because you believe Thai cops(immigration bureau is part of the police force here) are always righteous and never demand any brown envelops?

700 might be 16 USD plus a fee?

Not familiar with that Pattaya agent you mentioned. However it's not a throw away flight.

In any event for those using "rent a ticket" Option then it's an online thing that's completed on the spot.

Obviously you require internet and a payment option (eg debit card)

What. ... I don't accept the account.

Simple.

On top of that it's not even first hand.

Sounds like something from Soi 4 Sukhumvit
