Bangkok Bank - No yellow book, no new account

Featured Replies

Just a heads up for expats. I have one account with Bangkok Bank and tried to open a new one. They now require a yellow book, a residence cert isn't enough anymore.

OP should try another branch as this is Thailand and rules are made up or applied on a daily changing basis depending on the mood of "god" behind the counter.

  • You mistake was choosing BBL.

Ordinarily I would agree with you, but here I had Customer Service involved with manager at bank.

I have had an account with them for many years. But, I need another account.

Which bank would you recommend for ease?

Kasikorn even more so if you use WISE.

If you end up opening a bank account (with any bank) please report back your experience.

Hopefully a COR would not be required by bank.

Assume you have eg Non O status.

Will do.

BBL just really don't want foreigners any longer.

Certainly not rolling out the Red carpet.

When you go to another bank take your lease if you have one.

Would be pain to have to obtain a certificate of residence from immigration.

Previously not required.

These days who knows.

That's why we hope for positive report

Even local Kbanks are requesting WP or Yellow book.
Mileage may vary by Province.

This banking stuff is getting scary. We are all essentially being debanked because the Thai government can't manage to keep the felons out of the country.

Unrelated but related...I just read another hurdle when buying sim card. They want biometric data.

I changed my plan with dtac a couple of months ago, and they insisted they had to take a photo now for biometric evidence - TIT!

In what way is WISE better with Kasikorn than Bkk Bank please?

Many years using Bkk Bank and only ever ONE mishap, where WISE sent it to Kasikorn, so I had to get Credit Advise. No problems at Immigration.

My Bkk Bank takes my photo AND a copy of my passport or Pink Card almost every time. Adds at least one minute onto my visit.

And who takes the most selfies.Thai girls.

K is  not better than BBL for transfers using WISE.

They both allow a transfer of up to 2mil unlike most banks.

My post was directed to nonsense requirements currently from BBL and poster asking for alternative.

BTW: apart from the current nonsense BBL do not produce 12 month bank statement on the spot unlike other banks.

Including Kasikorn

Please, what nonsense requirements are they? WISE to Bkk Bank, cash out of ATM. Done.

I know that things can take a while if you must visit one of the branches which are left, but, in my situtation I only need to update my books every month in a machine, and two x 6 month statements per year....prevents having to wait a week for a 12 month one.

For renewal of extension.

Yesterday had first hand report (via pm) of fella on extension retirement being made to sign a "bogus form" freezing the funds for next 4 months.

The 4 months starts from date of "Bank Letter" for immigration.

Despite the 800k already being in the account for 2 months.

This report is against reports of the 4 months starting from when balance was 800k.

Im not about to provide links to threads outlining this new requirement from BBL.

The 12 month statement is just an added minor thing.

I needed a CoR when I opened my Kasikorn account approx 2 years back but hopefully they won't need a yellow book as I want to open a Mutual Funds account with them.

Jack is referring to these ridiculous new Bangkok bank requirements for the Immigration letter.

It doesn't affect many BKB customers, but it's still arbitrary.

Bangkok Bank, or individual branches of Bangkok Bank, are currently in panic mode and seem to be making up new rules on an almost daily basis.

For the time being, they are probably best avoided for new accounts, at least if you value your sanity.

For what it's worth I was in BBL central Bangkok the other day. No English notices posted. I wd 150k cash and same before just sign photocopy of ppt

The current issue with BBL is not about withdrawals etc as you outlined.

It's concerning obtaining Bank Letter for extensions based on retirement and marriage using funds in bank method.

From all the recent reports, their focus when it comes to "verifying" existing accounts seems to be on accounts opened at their Pattaya branches within the last 2-3 years - for the time being at least.

That won't be consistent across branches, anyway most people are moving away from BB

The only consistent thing in Thailand is it's inconsistency.

I went to Krung Thai to activate the KT Next app on my phone. Had to go back three times for it to "work" and now I'm only allowed to transfer 1000 Baht even though stated limit is 50K.

I asked them why and the lady proceeded to call her own KTB call center. Another teller said it could be because "the government bank is updating". "Maybe OK on Monday".

At this point I left because I had reached my limit (emotionally, not financially) , and today I still can't transfer more than 1000 Baht.
