What’s your longest time without seeing another Farang?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

Here is a curious Topic, if you will.

Yet, this question is one which is mentioned often among YouTubers in Thailand.

We often hear YouTubers reporting on Thailand who bemoan the fact that they have not seen another Farang for…blah-blah..days.

But, what about you?

Do you hold the record on TV, or in the Farang Pub (which, sadly, no longer exists), for the most consecutive days without seeing another Farang?

Personally, I think I once went about a year without seeing another Farang, or maybe 14 months. However, my record number of days was not recorded in Thailand. Now that I think about it, I once went for almost two years without seeing another person that looked like me. Only Asians did I see, until one Farang popped up, after about 800 days.

So, what about you?

What is the greatest amount of time, number of days or years, that you have gone without seeing another Farang?

This also brings to mind the great book:  The Good Earth

Naturally, there have been many accounts of missionaries who have lived and worked in China without seeing another Farang, for years.  I do not regard myself as one of those who could exist for decades without proper healthcare provided by a fellow Farang.

45 years ago, doing without seeing a fellow Farang, while in Asia, for many months, was not strange. This was the norm.

And, it was not a hardship. For example, there were benefits such as never needing to celebrate the 4th of July, like they do back home in the UK.  And, back then, we never celebrated Christmas, either.

Do you think you hold the record for the greatest number of days, going without seeing another Farang?

What is your record?

I bet you could put some of these new, young YouTubers to shame.

So, what is your record?

Best regards,

Gamma

See them every day in Chiang Rai.

The longest time I was without contact with any other person was two weeks, on a hunting trip of three weeks.

When I got back to civilization, the twin towers had come down, and I thought the world had gone mad.

Still is.

Living in Saraphi I rarely see any.  The last time was a month ago here.

I live in central, north Bangkok minutes from Sukhumvit by MRT. I see perhaps 1 2 farang a week in my very popular area bustling with young Thai. If I go to malls near me the numbers are similar.

Last time I was in Central Lad Phrao I saw no farang, one the time before (wearing flip flops as well 😳). Rama9 gets a few more, but not much more

They all live in the tourist ghetto of Sukhumvit where their fat asses can get western food at 400b+ a meal and unconfusing BTS only runs two ways... back and forth.

It's actually a good thing bc Thais don't want anything to do with this lot.

3 months , but that was back in the uk

I have lived in a Soi, in a small Thai town for 19 years, not only can I not see a farang  for ages but also go lengthy stretches without speaking English... Thankfully I have the internet to listen to to the radio.......

I keep hoping forever, but already saw one this morning.

I'm just wondering why a few here are so against other foreigners that they have to comment on how bad many, or most, are, not wanting to be around them, saying, "just another typical farang getting into trouble here", thinking that because they see a few foreigners in the news doing something stupid, they're all like that, still not realizing most of the problems in this country are caused by locals. Why the aversion, abhorrence, dislike or negativity against most just from  the acts of a few? Some can't make a comment unless it puts a shot against a foreigner. Why would you dislike your own kind?

Saw two In Esan twang dang (that's how they spell it) this week in Bangkok. One was with an embarrassing bar girl clearly off her head on something, the other turns up in shorts and a singlet like he just walked off the beach. Farang are best avoided in real life.

Seeing, everyday ... talking to, TBH, can't remember the last time.  My brother & wife, in Feb this year.  Before that, unknown.

Though on the rare occasion I do, it's usually a pleasant experience.  But I don't go to bars, so they are nothing like the majority of folks on AN :cheesy:

How did you get along with other foreigners before you moved here? Has moving here changed your opinion on other foreigners? Why?Shorts are normal wear for every warm area.

Foreigners here are mostly scum, shorts are not the normal attire in that sort of place.

No one can say that unless they know the majority of foreigners here, which no one alive does. Seeing a few here and there isn't enough to judge all. You also can't compare tourists with those that live here, as they act differently all over, while those that are residents take care of many women , girlfriends and children, and contribute to Thai society, along with not getting into trouble like tourists do. Shorts are warm weather apparel everywhere. No one in their right minds wears jeans or pants all the time in hot weather unless they're businessmen.

Depends on how long I wait on  Saturdays for the Laos "house cleaner" to arrive.

While I can’t really physically avoid them in Thailand.  I understand.

20% normal.  40%hermit (or social misfit).  40% nutter.

After seeing what’s on the forum just remember they’re out there somewhere.

Much prefer to socialize with tourists or passing through types than the deeply Iimbedded expat types that have lost touch with reality moaning about every baht.

No problem paying for 400 baht meals or more for speacity foods.

Hunting is a clear manifestation of animal cruelty, and it is essential for you to recognize the moral implications of supporting such actions. You should take a moment to reflect on the shame associated with this practice.

Oh dear,

The Vegans have infiltrated the forum.

Seen a couple this morning at Makro, one was an over weight unshaven scrapper. Seen another unshaven scrapper yesterday at Kad doisaket wearing a thick winter coat and dirty clothes looked poor and destitute, skedaddled out of there rather quickly, probably on overstay.

Its great fun to be honest, sadly not much of it here in Thailand other than feral cats.

Hunting is harvesting for food, and elimination of vermin that compete with livestock for pasture.

Unless you are a vegan or vegetarian, there is no difference between hunting, and any meat bought at a supermarket. The process is the same.

I suppose you don't fish either, the hooks are too cruel.

Humans have been hunters since they stood upright. It was only after agriculture developed that obesity surfaced.

Unfortunately, living in Phuket they cannot be avoided this morning doing my usual walking exercise saw a couple, went for a coffee and a couple came in, most of my neighbors are farangs but I don't mix with them say hello that's it, I speak to the Thai's or the Burmese as I did this morning,

I don't go out drinking no more so I don't mix with any, which suits me, if we go our for a meal I only go with Thai poo ying like we did last Sunday,

Nobody dislikes Farang.

However, one problem seems to be that if there is another Farang walking by, and if that Farang is a complete stranger to you, ...

Still, just because they are a Farang, they mistakenly believe the two of you are great buddies, or long lost pals, or chums.

They don't get it.

They think skin color is important.

But, very often it turns out that you and the newly arrived Farang have nothing in common.

It is not that I do not have Farang friends.

I do.

But, they don't live near me.

They live in New York, where they belong.

Anytime I see a Farang here, I know this Farang is a stranger, just passing through.

What should I do?

Run out and say to them:  Welcome to town. Do you have time to talk about the traffic situation, and the local drivers?

There are plenty of people around here, but they seem to be all Thai, with the exception of a pair from Burma.

Besides: This Topic is NOT about Farang bashing.  The question is..."how long do we sometimes go without seeing a Farang"....Can you tell the difference?  You seem to be confusing the question in the Headline of the Topic.

People here, and on this forum, avoid foreigners. Everyone knows who they are, and all we wonder is the reasons why. If you would look at other's replies, not only here but in many other topics, you'd see.

Hunting is a positive aspect of human behavior, and one that's been with us all along. Many have gotten away from it because meat is easily available in stores now, but hunters eat the game they shoot, and I, along with many others, share it with non hunters.

Hunting is a necessary activity and is the reason we have so many more animals to hunt now than ever before, especially the deer species.

Hunters are the main contributors to wildlife habitat, and are also big contributors to many economies and businesses.

With all the development that has gone on the last century, and the loss of habitat to homes and businesses, the animals have to be kept within the carrying capacity of the land they inhabit, or they will over populate, starve, spread disease and incur more accidents with vehicles and attacks of humans. Killing a deer with a weapon, fast, is much more humane than letting them over populate and starve. Many people don't understand the dynamics that go along with game management, and even many non hunters understand why it's necessary, as the predators aren't enough to keep those animals in check.

Hunting doesn't exist here because the people don't understand nor care about conservation. If you stocked 1 million deer here, they would all be dead within a month. the same goes for the fish here, as most are netted out with no desire to maintain a put and take system, where only a few are allowed per day, per person, and size limits are adhered to, which preserves the fishery and has it continue for generations to come. Shooting cats is another abnormal practice.

Act normal and smile a lot.......try not to overwhelm them with a tsunami of obstruse verbiage.

I don't go out of my way to meet or avoid farangs; not often seen in our part of Chanthaburi, since Covid I'm now the only one in our town population 9,000. If I go to the city Central or Robinson, I'll always greet with a hello that gets about a 50% hello in response.

In terms of actual conversations easy to remember, five in 2023, two in 2024 (Australian in January, German in November). For 2025, it was while traveling out of Chanthaburi, a two-for-one deal, I met two from UK in July, conversation around cycling and motorbikes no mention of the dreaded 'back home' etc and I'd happily meet them again.
