250 years is not that long in historical terms.  And don't forget they took the US by force from the people who had been living there far longer.

I get why people are proud to be American but a flag is just a bit of cloth.

It's all about perspective, whilst I agree 250 years is not that long in historical terms, you could equally say humans, who have been around for approx 300,000 years, is not that long in Earths history, which is 4.5 Billion years. You could also say a butterflies life is not that long compared that of a human?  

 

Back to the flag, I agree its a piece of cloth..but its significance goes far beyond that. It’s a symbol of national identity, history, and values like freedom and sacrifice. For some, it’s just fabric; for others, it’s a powerful emblem tied to personal or collective meaning, often evoking strong emotions due to its association with events like wars, protests, or celebrations. 

You could say a 100 dollar bill is just a piece of paper? But saying that misses its role as legal tender, backed by the U.S. government’s promise of value. It’s a symbol of economic trust, used daily in transactions, and carries cultural weight.
