Slowly losing the plot in Thailand.

Featured Replies

The heat, the masks, the smells, the traffic, the tuk tuks, the delivery drivers, the 'hey my friends', the 'where you come froms', the trannies that say 'darling', the ones that never stop at zebra crossings & the ones that run red lights, the ever increasing prices, the constant flip flopping on bangkin and visas..

Anyone else feel like they are slowing going mad here?

You get used to it, but yes, after 20 years here I'm slowly going mad.

same here. when all you see is the negative perhaps it's time to move on to pastures anew.

After around the same amount of time here i see, the good the bad and the ugly but i have accepted it and realize

no country is perfect.

have you tried visiting some other locations? it's easy to get stuck here out of laziness especially as you get older. it's going to be easier to do that now. the longer you wait the more difficult it seems to be...

Too late for me now.  Burnt my bridges back home.

Actually none of those really bother me, as I came from Texas, which is hotter on average. I don't like the rainy season, as it makes going outdoors impossible for months at a time, at least for awhile. I'm not in a tourist area, as I prefer the country outside the cities, so those things aren't a problem.

What I dislike most, and this is mainly for my daughter's sake, as I can't enjoy my hobbies here anyway, is how the women are treated by the men.  I won't allow that with my daughter, so that's one reason we'll leave. I see students sitting on top of the local buses going to and from school, and that will never happen with my girl. She is being raised as a Christian, away from the misogynist thinking of Buddhism her mom doesn't practice anyway.

The best schools in this area cannot compare with any schools in the area we will move to, as her education means a lot to me, as the rest of my children are all doing well in their careers. I can't pick her partners for her, but she will have a much better chance of finding a decent one in the US. No guarantees of course but if you look at percentages, her chances of being treated better are much higher in the US than here, and if she has any children and the man leaves, he will be made sure to provide for them.

She will be safer driving in the US, as she'll never be allowed to drive a scooter and will have no need for one back home.

With this Cambodian thing, I'm not sure it will ever be totally safe living as close as we do to the border, so that's another major reason added on.

She will be more independent, like my others, as her schooling will be better and she will go to college there. She loves animals, especially cats and dogs, and she sees how they are treated by locals here, poisoning when they're mad at them and the plain disdain shown in general. Thailand is an okay country in some ways, but the lack of care is plainly evident, especially for the children, so she will have a much brighter future when we leave.

It depends where you came from because some places are worse now

Perhaps a different location, after all it is you who chose the your current location.

There's also a negative side.

Everywhere has negatives and positives, yes the heat can be a strain sometimes (most the time 😀) and Bangkok traffic is bad, but getting out of the city can give a break from the traffic and give some relief from the heat.

And I just don't see Thai zebra crossings as anything more than a pattern on the road, they have no purpose here, so just ignore them.

But I also try to see the positives every day.  People making eye contact, even in Bangkok, most people are generally nice and friendly (if you smile), most issues can be fixed with money, and if not, they can be fixed with more money.

Religion is generally harmless here, woke does not exist, politics is just business.

My home country is self destructing, but I don't get too stressed about that as I'm far away.

And I have a wonderful, beautiful woman, who's main aim in life (after eating 8 times a day) is looking after me.

Thailand is what one makes of it. I love it here, getting out on my scooter, my younger GF, the variety of restaurants, massages, golf, swimming, reading etc. All at costs which are peanuts compared to my country of origin.

I don't notice the heat, smells, traffic etc. They fade into my background.

If the OP is bugged so much, perhaps Thailand is not the place for him.

Land can be cheap here, but you need someone you trust 100% to buy it.

We have a small farm, and it's a great place to detox from the city.

Yes, a lot of things bother me, especially when I spent 2 years straight without going anywhere.

Now I have to get out of here at least 2 or 3 months a year - March/April are a must it's too damn hot/polluted/crowded).

Thailand is still a very good place to live.

Yes.  It's OK but really it's the women that make most people stay here.  Other than that, it's certainly no more than average.

Cayman Islands sounds good.

Could you afford it there?

No, just you that can´t connect the dots. I was just thinking that if you relocate, maybe you will not have so much time or feel the need to post so much rubbish here. Did the baht fall down now?
