Slowly losing the plot in Thailand.

We already had to be a little crazy to leave our homes, jobs, and lives in Europe to move to Thailand. But there’s no need to torture yourself by going back, staying for a while, and realising you’re still dissatisfied. You can always explore other places—like Vietnam, Cambodia, or Indonesia—and then compare.

In my case, I find it tough if I’m stuck in Thailand for more than two months—three at the very most. I need a break from it all, so I head to Indonesia, Vietnam, or elsewhere. After a while, I get annoyed with those countries too, and that’s when I come back.

I'd say that's a perfect life right there.

  • Get the ultimate fix,go back to where you came from for one month! You will be willing to crawl back to Thailand!

  • Actually none of those really bother me, as I came from Texas, which is hotter on average. I don't like the rainy season, as it makes going outdoors impossible for months at a time, at least for awhil

  • Everywhere has negatives and positives, yes the heat can be a strain sometimes (most the time 😀) and Bangkok traffic is bad, but getting out of the city can give a break from the traffic and give some

There's a lot of petty theft in Cayman Islands.

Don't just read glossy retirement magazines.

Go on a Cayman Island forum.

S'pore boring? You just don't do it right.

There isn't. One of the safest places on earth.

Taiwan is super boring. A lot more boring than Singapore.

Thailand is much better.

Not a big fan of the food in Taiwan either, apart from those curly noodles.

The Caymans are nice.

For me, Im a bit distressed by the behavior of Thailand and Cambodia. The travel times are a bit inconvenient for me at this time.

So I have been looking at some alternatives.

Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, Crete, Batumi and Tuscany. All have advantages and disadvantages, like Thailand.

Seven Mile Beach is the best in the world, I don't care what anyone says.

The behaviour of Thailand and Cambodia? What do you mean?

Yah, it's a nightmare to get there from here.

Indeed there is no perfect place, just as there's no perfect woman. Sure you have better air and better driving in Singapore, but you can't get a car there, and who wants to pay 5000 USD for rent?

Exactly. Every place has flaws. Its best, I think, to have a winter and summer place.

Thailand and Cambodia do not deserve my money any more since they dont know how to behave. But its a process LOL.

The fact that you would need help in deciphering a typo is telling.

Every once in a while you need a break.  I do not mind living here.  But where I am from the whole country is changing so, its nice to visit.  If there was a great sandwich shop here in Thailand then basically I would never ever have to leave.

The fact you are too lazy to correct typos is also telling.

Being stuck here has nothing to do with being lazy. I'm satisfied with my life here and don't have the desire to travel anywhere. Lazy? Well, I hit the gym nearly every day for 1 - 2 hours, so no, not lazy.

To the OP, no, after 20 years in Pattaya, the things that are bothering you don't bother me at all. They might have when I first arrived, but now it's the new normal. I recently moved out of the tourist area to a part of town where I hardly see any foreigners at all, so that's even better. I have no problem with expats, but tourists can be annoying at times.

A lot of guys hover around the pattaya area because they are engaged in utilizing the services of prostitutes.

Could you afford it there?

No Bob

The only things that make me mad are the very dangerous way of riding/driving and the lack of respect for pedestrians. Apart from that, it's a beautiful country to live in!

That’s exactly why most of us ended up here, at least at first. Then the existential boredom starts to creep in.

Yes, but I was relocated by my employer to Thailand, so very different to finding a job here.

That sounds like a pretty cushy option. Working for a Thai company seems intimidating to me, maybe I’m missing something, but I’ve always wondered why so many people choose to work for them.

The immigration or bank harassments towards quality foreigners for their long stays, the cheats in construction who scam you for the smallest maintenance job at your condo or home, le cheating prices in restaurants serving smaller portions and charging prices that are catching the prices in Europe. Mainly in places like Hua Hin where they are really cheating all foreigners in inflated prices from anything to nothing. So Yes, all this can drive one mad if you don't start taking the steps to sell and move to another more welcoming Asian country.

I'm not seeing the inflated prices, the Tesco Lotus Fresh near me has very reasonable prices.

2x pork steaks 49bht, 1kg chips 75bht, 2l Pepsi 35bht, Farmhouse wholewheat bread 44bht.

25 mins in the air fryer gives me a steak and chips dinner for around 40bht.

refering mostly to restaurants not to the local supermarket. in fact as it's so cheap at Tesco, no reason to have such high rates for the dishes served at the restaurant.

Many of those who can, are putting their property in Thailand on sale and moving out of Thailand.

Enough of the "you no like - you leave"....,,well, the foreigners with good spending power, are leaving after all.

The heat, the masks, the smells, the traffic, the tuk tuks, the delivery drivers, the 'hey my friends', the 'where you come froms', the trannies that say 'darling', the ones that never stop at zebra crossings & the ones that run red lights, the ever increasing prices, the constant flip flopping on bangkin and visas..

Anyone else feel like they are slowing going mad here?

No, I'm getting sane in Isaan.

What I dislike most, and this is mainly for my daughter's sake, as I can't enjoy my hobbies here anyway, is how the women are treated by the men.  I won't allow that with my daughter, so that's one reason we'll leave. I see students sitting on top of the local buses going to and from school, and that will never happen with my girl. She is being raised as a Christian, away from the misogynist thinking of Buddhism her mom doesn't practice anyway.

The best schools in this area cannot compare with any schools in the area we will move to, as her education means a lot to me, as the rest of my children are all doing well in their careers. I can't pick her partners for her, but she will have a much better chance of finding a decent one in the US. No guarantees of course but if you look at percentages, her chances of being treated better are much higher in the US than here, and if she has any children and the man leaves, he will be made sure to provide for them.

She will be safer driving in the US, as she'll never be allowed to drive a scooter and will have no need for one back home.

With this Cambodian thing, I'm not sure it will ever be totally safe living as close as we do to the border, so that's another major reason added on.

She will be more independent, like my others, as her schooling will be better and she will go to college there. She loves animals, especially cats and dogs, and she sees how they are treated by locals here, poisoning when they're mad at them and the plain disdain shown in general. Thailand is an okay country in some ways, but the lack of care is plainly evident, especially for the children, so she will have a much brighter future when we leave.

That's why the vast majority of people, legal and otherwise, emigrate to the U.S.  Thailand is a great country for old men and drunken whoremongers, but what sane Westerner would want their kid to be educated in the land of rote learning?  A kid with a lobotomy in the West is better off than an Einstein who attends the village schools.

Many expats also stay in Pattaya because it is the most livable place in Thailand. Most expats don't live in the central area where all the beer bars/gogos are found - it's a big place with lots of accommodation options far from the bars. I've been married for most of the time I've lived in Pattaya and don't visit bars. Your vision of Pattaya is biased by your tunnel vision. I've never been interested in bar girls in Pattaya.

If there is a better place for foreigners to live in Thailand, I'm all ears. Explain why it is better, and you may be able to convince me to move, but after 20 years, I've not found a better place.

Utilising the services of prostitutes is something quite possible anywhere in Thailand, just as it probably is in your home country.
