Wise transfers suddenly stopped working

Featured Replies

Could this be because of a new EU regulation? This is from Gemini:

"A new European regulation under the Instant Payments Regulation (IPR) mandates that banks will verify the name of the recipient against their IBAN for credit transfers, starting by October 9, 2025. This Verification of Payee (VoP) scheme is designed to increase security, reduce fraud, and prevent misdirected payments within the euro payment area by providing a warning if the name doesn't match the account number"

It says "within the euro payment area" though.

That’s great. I have been transferring to this account for many years and never had a problem with the name on the account. Like you, I checked and my middle name was missing. I have added it and it still says the name is different. I think it is something to do with the Banking Partner not being Bangkok Bank.

I think your right.  Not conclusive but most of the recent issues I'm aware of have been Tranglo related whose name checking seems to be stricter than others.

One way to perhaps get round it would be to state the reason for transfer to be for long stay in Thailand or buying property as these seem to be forced through Bangkok Bank as the partner thus bypassing Tranglo's over exuberant checks.

That should hopefully strengthen your case for getting the และ changed to AND on your joint account, I would have thought. Good luck with the bank!

Unfortunately your situation is not helped by Wise's steadfast refusal to have account holders' name details recorded in their systems in other than the English format. That's my only beef with them, personally.

My bank branch is not interested. They told me the problem is with Wise and not them and I must go to Wise. I have another account in my sole name with Bangkok Bank at another branch in Hua Hin. They have always been excellent. They cannot change the เเละ to AND as it has to be done by the branch who opened the account. I will go back to them and ask to open a new joint account using AND. Once done I will close the account at the other branch.

You have hit the nail on the head! All of my 6 failed transfers had either Tranglo or Transferwise as the banking partner. I think 5 Tranglo and 1 Transferwise.

When I deleted the Bangkok Bank recipient on my sole account  (me) and set it up again it was successful BUT the banking partner was Kasikorn. It was not shown as an FTT though.
I had our joint Bangkok Bank tagged previously and ALL transfers were shown as FTT. Reason for transfer was ALWAYS defaulted to long term stay in Thailand.
Now if I try to transfer using that joint account the default  long term stay option is not there and I need to re-select it.
What worked perfectly for over 15 years is now a complete mess. Currently I cannot transfer funds into that joint Bangkok Bank account and even if I can I think the FTT has disappeared.

I think it'll still be there, only not as obvious as before as the box with the pull down list is not always shown.  If you use the website look for this:

Capture.JPG.fa41867de44ad94645446b9a3cff2c30.JPG

or in the app a similar screen can be seen in the first pic in this thread.

https://aseannow.com/topic/1371522-65000-income-problem-with-wise/

However, I just noted when I took the screenshot from the website that it said it would be received "in seconds" which I've not seen in a few months.  This usually means no delivery just after 2:00pm and no FTT marking so things may well be up in the air again.

I have had the same problem and visited my bank who assured me it was not them but it was a problem with WISE.  They have had a few similar enquiries!

I even tried using my partners details for the transfer and it didn’t work. WISE redirected me to my bank for the money! Even though they held my money for “ 2 days “!

I will try the middle name fiasco and see if that works, if not then back to TorFX.

For years been transferring regular monthly amounts .. to joint Bangkok Bank account. Today transfer cancelled as says name on recipient account does not match. Tried to send the funds to account in my name only at SCB. Same thing happened. Anybody else experienced this or know how to resolve it?

I had the same Bangkok Bank problem last week, after 2.5 years success.  Bank said account number not correct. Rubbish! Tried again, same nonsense.

I had similar issues with my last 2no Wise transfers from UK to SCB, funded via Nationwide. This was on 28Aug and early am on 31Aug.

Both times Wise sent me an email indicating a name mismatch with advice to do 1 of 3:

Change recipient bank

If details correct, try again

Cancel transfer and obtain a refund.

I have been using the same name /bank details for many years with no issue, so I went for the 'Try Again' option. Both times this worked and the transfers arrived in the usual seconds.

Both successful transfers had 'Banking partner as 'Tranglo SGP (THB)'. This matched with an earlier transfer which did not have any mismatch warning. Unfortunately I did not pick up any partner info on the unsuccessful transfers, if indeed available, as that may have indicated a different partner and a possible reason  why the mismatch warning was given.

I am due to arrange my monthly 65k transfer via BBL and have seen the comments on possible issues with BBL on FTT recording. Will hold on setting that up until the 1st to avoid a premature transfer, but hopefully this is not a return to the problems of a few years back. Having to send 100k minimum, as noted by an earlier poster, whilst doable, would not be ideal for me at this time. Will be interested in any feedback on this in the next day or so.

Yes, yes we all know it gets done instantly when sent from some other place, but I am speaking here for Europe and sometimes it would take quite long to arrive in Thailand. But since I started using the service directly fron my bank, it's on my account next day, for far less then the fees I had to pay with the Revolutes and others and the exchange rate is not all that bad...so it's back to the basics and it's not bad at all.

Regarding the slowness of the transfer it depends on when you send. I have sent to my daughters account and it took just a few seconds. I have sent to my account and it has take a few hours. Not sure as to why that should be but it happens at times. Other times I send to my account and a few seconds the money is in the bank.

The reason for transfer may impact this and/or the amount. If you choose Funds for Long Term Stay in Thailand and Bangkok Bank is the banking partner to get the FTT code it may not arrive until that afternoon or sometimes the next day. I had lots of transfers over ฿50,000 using this reason for transfer and the funds always arrive at 2:13 p.m.  Since the latest name matching debacle I cannot send funds at all to our joint Bangkok Bank account due to เเละ (and) being between our two names. Bangkok Bank blame Wise and won’t change the เเละ to AND so we will open a joint account with another branch/or bank and close that account.

As well as issues now transferring to our Bangkok Bank joint account after 15 years of no problem transfers I also had problems transferring to my SCB account in my sole name. Like you I am (have always) transferring from U.K. to SCB funded by Nationwide. 5 of my 6 transfer failures across both banks were Tranglo SGP (THB). My successful transfer to my Bangkok Bank account in my sole name was shown as Kasikorn. To get that to work I had to delete myself as the recipient and set myself up again. I have not tried deleting myself as a recipient on SCB and setting myself up again but think that might work. So my guess is sole accounts with no Thai characters should be OK but we cannot get round our joint account issue as it uses เเละ (AND) as Wise does not allow Thai characters in an account name therefore there is a mismatch and transfer cancelled. With our Bangkok Bank branch saying the issue is with Wise not them our only option would seem to be to open a new account at another branch of Bangkok Bank (or another Bank altogether) and ensure they use AND and no Thai characters in our names then go back to the other branch and close our current joint account.

I agree large sums need clearance but on the other hand banks spend a fortune on computer networks so in theory clearance should not take very at all if it coming to your account from an account in your name overseas. The originating bank will for sure have checked where the money came from before depositing in your account.

A hassle for sure. Having to make changes on a transfer process that has worked perfectly for many years seems crazy, even more so when, in your case, it is left to you to try options to resolve the issue rather than the banks making efforts to assist. Good luck.

At least, for me, my monthly 65k transfer to BBL came through in the usual fashion today. Actioned by me at 8am and arriving just after 2pm with an indication of 'International funds transfer'. So that was good.

That’s great news your transfers are working as they should.

The Banking partner is shown on today’s first transfer as “Tranglo SGP (THB)”.  The Banking partner is shown on today’s second transfer as “TransferWise Ltd”. Always been shown as “Bangkok Bank THB” on previous successful transfers.

Just recently transferred money,  I problems for me

Same experience last week. BB refused payment because name wrong which I use already years. Money came back after an hour and switched to Krung Thai bank. In 2 minutes arrived.

We will set up a joint account with another bank. Thankfully we both also have sole accounts with BB and after deleting and setting up ourselves up again as recipients the transfers work. The failure on our joint BB account is clearly down to the account having เเละ not AND between our names.

As long as you are happy with the service you use. I use Revolut and find it cheap when done the right way, it is almost instant. the biggest no ,no with all these newish currency transfer banks. Never, never transfer at weekends.

It says "within the euro payment area" though.

IBAN is used mainly in Europe where it originated and some middle eastern countries. Certainly not used in Thailand. When sending funds IBAN only required if recipient is in an IBAN country. A recipient in Thailand wouldn't have an IBAN.

A bit academic as far as Wise goes as that is a peer to peer arrangement, no funds actually move.

However it wouldn't be unusual for Wise to try and keep their way of doing things in line with other banking arrangements. They have had their wrist slapped a couple of times.

Facial recognition problems, Wise transfers rejected, Internet banking apps being scrapped and Thai phone apps with transfer limits; Thai banking is becoming a potential nightmare. I will just stick to getting fee free cash from my UK credit card - only need the Thai bank book for immigration. No stress for me.

I send transfers to SCB all the time. I suggest trying Remitly.com. Very low transaction price and it’s available almost immediately.

just what I use. Not sure if there is something better. But I am satisfied with zero issues

Same problem, as the Wise transfer goes out Ok, says funds transferring, but Bangkok Bank rejects the transfer back to Wise because it is a joint bank account and BKK bank will not accept single transfers to my joint account anymore. More to follow on this saga...... P.S. no problem with transfers to my name only bangkok bank account.

Do you have และ between the account holder names? We do and I assumed this was what the problem is and not that it is a single transfer to a joint account. Wise only accepts English characters.

I also have no problem with transfers from Wise to my name only Bangkok Bank account as the name is all English characters.

And are both account holders' names in English? My joint account with BBL has my name first, followed by my wife's name in Thai. Thus, I ignored the entire Thai discourse that follows my name when setting this up years ago. And have had no problems, as recent as 2 days ago. Hmmm. Oh, I use a PC, not a mobile -- different algorithms may be at play......
