Bangkok Bank for expats

Featured Replies

I just visited a small Bangkok Bank branch and they refused to open an account for me. They gave me an info sheet in Thai with all the paperwork required. I had it all with me: passport, visa, house registration, pink card.

Clearly, these restrictions are due to money laundering laws from the US. In fact, in many jurisdictions, US citizens are not even allowed to open bank accounts.

I'm Canadian so this world police power should not be applied to me. I'm going to make one more pass at this branch, convenient to me. If not, there's Thai Farmers right next door.

As of now, it appears Bangkok Bank doesn't want my money despite the fact I have all my retirement funds in an account with them!

Anybody have recent experience opening accounts?

Yes. Same exact story.  They wanted a yellow book. I can't be bothered

Went to Kbank and no problem with passport and DL. It was a pleasant experience.

Just for the record, a few years back I gave the details of an account, not with Bangkok bank, to the bank I had been given to use and informed them this was being used by a scammer. 3 months later I went back into that same branch and asked if they hade done anything with the information I had previously given them. Their answer was "No we have not".

Talk is cheap but actions need a lot more than a few words on a paper.

(US citizen) no recent experience with Bangkok Bank, but i had to go into Krungthai bank and update my FATCA paperwork after 7 years using this account even though my US Tax ID has not changed.  The banker says they are now automatically sunsetting FATCA docs every 2 years and requiring us to fill in the form again.   Hopefully they don't randomly lock out my banking app without notice in 2 years when i forget about this process.

Nothing to do with it.

Read the numerous threads in the banking section discussing BBL accounts and you'll soon get an idea what's behind it.

I suspect it depends on the individual and their personal financial situation. Not all of us are the same in this regard.  Like most (I suspect) I keep most of my money outside of Thailand.

Having typed that, I used to have five accounts with Bangkok Bank (now I am down to only four).  I used to have with Bangkok Bank (1) regular THB account (2) fixed THB account (I used to keep my 800k THB in this account for a Type-O/OA visa support ( but I have since  closed this account )) , (3) US$ Foreign currency account, (4) Canadian $ Foreign currency account (5) Euro account.  I suppose if one considers the Bangkok Bank credit card guarantee account that could be #6 with Bangkok bank .. ... And I have other accounts as well with other banks (SCB, Krungsri).

Why?  I diversify. Never all one's eggs in one basket. Especially IMHO with banks.

Obviously that is an absolutely silly strategy for many - but again, it really depends on one's own finances. Our financial situations can be very different.

I have 2 accounts with Bangkok Bank so I can keep my 800K in a fixed deposit account where it earns a little bit of interest & makes it impossible to accidentally spend it down below the amount I need to keep for my extensions.

I also have an account with Kasikorn bank, mainly because if Bangkok Bank is having any "Technical Issues" I can use the KBank account but also it helps spread the risk of keeping >1Million THB in a single Bank.

I (My Partner) recenty opened an account with Krungsri in her name (Though I have the app on my phone/atm card etc...) so if anything ever happened to me, she could use the Bank Book to take money out of the account to live on whilst things get sorted, currently have approx. 3 months expenses in there but plan is to keep topping it up until there's 1 years expenses covered which should be enough until she can get access to my main accounts.

I would definately recommend anybody to have more than 1 account, especially if that 1 account is with Bangkok Bank

Did you try to open another regular savings acct when you already had one?

Normally, banks will not open two accts of the same type. But, they will open different types of accts such as; Individual THB, Joint THB, fixed deposit, and FCD accts.

I think for anyone following the news it is pretty clear that Bangkok Bank is a terrible choice of bank for any foriegner right now.

When the protection limit was reduce to 1Million THB in a single bank is when I opened an account in a different bank. I don't think Bangkok Bank will go bankrupt but I feel better having my money protected.

I think the protection limit per bank is something people should be aware of when having  multiple account in one bank.

It's not your money, it's the hassle of US paperwork to open, and yearly or quarterly reporting.   Sad that they lump all expats in with us Yanks, and simply don't want to deal with any expats at some branches.

I only use Thai bank, BBL, for monthly deposits for IMM, or I'd probably wouldn't have an account with them or any bank in TH.   Nothing against TH, as never used banks in USA either to hold money.

if you had all the requested paperwork what reason did they then give for their refusal to open an account for you ?

Nah. Wanted to open savings account, have fixed deposit.

I have always got two accounts of the same type, one with a Debt card and one without, and that is on four different banks

So why 8 regular savings accounts, 2 each at 4 different banks? Which banks did you open the accts? One of my banks told me they do not open multiple savings accts for the same person, so I assumed that was standard practice. I guess I was wrong. I have THB savings, joint THB savings and FCD accts.

Exactly the same happened to me very recently. Still not 100% sure how a scammer got my debit card number, then used it for 10 weeks, while I was not in Thailand, for dozens of purchases (Netflix, Duolingo, SeaWorld, etc.)... Not very optimistic that I will see a satang of it again. The bank wasn't very helpful, but I made up my mind to never ever leave a substantial amount in a Thai bank account.

Told me I didn't have all the right paperwork. It was only when I got home & read the paper they gave me, I realised I did have all the right stuff. FINCEN & the FATCAts...

Have a look into cyber security and it will let you see just how easy it is for these guys to get your information

If a member has no previous interests or issues with their personal banking here, why would they bother to check the site's banking forum " for the last month"? I would suggest that the majority of forum members are still unaware of the ongoing banking frisson here but each time an annual extension falls due, another member, especially those with BBL, get the rude awakening.

So you're a fan of having all your eggs in the same basket?

Luckily (for now) you opened your account with SCB. If they allow it, you are a prime example of someone who needs a second account, even at another bank if SCB says "cannot".

UPDATE: Had a second pass at ther Bangkok Bank branch I want. Accepted the paperwork, sent to head office for approval. Went next door & opened an account at Thai Farmers with no hassle at all.

SCB, Krungsri are my next targets. Can't catch me--I'm the Gingerbread Man!

I opened that account when I was working in Thailand 20 years ago, kept money in it for whenever I was visiting.  But you are right, in this day and age, I think we should have more than one.  I have several accounts in my home country, as well as a Schwab Int’l card, so don’t expect I’ll ever run out of money - but SCB can say ‘Hey, no can do’. I’ll have a backup.       Peace
