Congrats to Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson for their masterful control of Chicago's gun violence, last year's Labor Day weekend saw  31 shot with 5 dead, and this year you've upgraded it to 37 shot with the same body count,  progress some Americans refuse to appreciate,.

Chicago and Illinois having some of the strictest gun laws & penalties.  They don't seem to be working very well.   Go figure.

You mean ... the criminals aren't obeying the laws.  Say it's not so ... :cheesy:

Nice try, but the far right isn’t out here pretending Pritzker and Johnson are NRA poster kids, last I checked, the left’s begging for gun control while Chicago’s streets racked up 37 shot and 5 dead this weekend, a tally no other big city can boast.

Reading some of the Chicago news blips of the shootings ...

... 19 year old kills 15 yr old, and 12 yr old in ICU.  You have to be 21 to buy a handgun legally.  No law would have stopped that one.

... 2 separate drive-bys, death & injuries from car load of people shooting into crowd.   Hmm, reading the gang banging turf war.   Sure they bought their guns legally :coffee1:

I stopped reading ... more on google if interested how the laws DON'T WORK

If not for gun violence I wonder if the politicians would care about the state of their cities?

DC is one thing, Chicago is another.

I think it sets a bad precedent too.

But Chicago is a mess for certain, no hope on the horizon.

True, but cartels taking potshots.  Then what do you do?

I think you got to set the bar high with what the rest of the country is doing.  Fix the voting fraud.  The cities will take care of themselves at some point.  Just got to be patient.

Chicago’s 37 shot and 5 dead this weekend, kids and gangs slinging illegal guns like it’s a turf war movie, prove it’s a hellhole.Send in the Calvary.

Meanwhile, contrary to the political rhetoric, here's the reality:

Red States Have Higher Gun Death Rates Than Blue States. Here’s Why

Apr 28, 2023

"A new study published in Journal of the American Medical Association’s Surgery found that firearm deaths are more likely in small rural towns than in major urban cities, adding to research that contradicts common belief that Democratic blue areas have higher incidences of gun-related deaths than do Republican red districts.

Researchers from Children’s Hospital Philadelphia, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and the University of California examined two decades of mortality rates and cause-of-death data from the National Center for Health Statistics’ National Vital Statistics System to compile the study.

A Third Way report found that between 2000 and 2020, Trump-voting states had 12% higher murder rates than did Biden-voting cities.  Data shows that in 2020, eight of the ten states with the highest murder rates voted for the Republican presidential nominee in every election in this century. [emphasis added]

So when's Trump going to start sending the National Guard to Louisiana, Alabama, Wyoming, etc etc.?  Of course, he won't... It's only going to be to Democrat-dominated cities and states, because his real game is about politics, not public safety.

Guess who has the highest survival rate from gun injuries?  The US military.  Russian's ain't bad either.

Now explain how that proves the point you are trying to make.

Cherry picking again ... as I looked at the first one, Mississippi, and until this century, 2000 onward, Mississippi was pretty much a Dem state, with few exceptions.

Guess they finally woke up and realized the Dems have failed them repeatedly.

Take a peek for yourself ...

And a bit of a more recent update on this, that shows a mixed picture on the Red-Blue divide that's still contrary to Trump's claims:

Where homicide rates are highest: Blue cities in red states

Aug 15, 2025

"To hear President Trump tell it, the nation's murder problem is particularly bad in New York City, Chicago, Baltimore, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. — Democratic-run cities in Democratic-led states (or district, in D.C.'s case).

  • New FBI crime figures from 2024 tell a different story.
  •

The big picture: 13 of the 20 U.S. cities with the highest murder rates were in Republican-run states. Many of those cities were run by Democrats who often are at odds with state officials, an Axios analysis of FBI data finds. [emphasis added]

We have a big city problem, we agree.

What cities are the best example of the way forward, or do we have any?

I'm only trying to counter a poster's misleading political propaganda... not solve the nation's ills. That's a bit above my pay grade. 🙂

But my personal opinion is, and it's only my opinion, that young people who aren't in poverty, who are able to get a decent education, and who aren't involved in drugs and gangs are probably less likely to get involved with firearm violence.

There have been at least 288 mass shootings in the United States so far this year, leaving at least 225 people dead and 1,300 injured, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA).

Going to add something for the debate here.

To the gun control advocates, you gotta drop it.  You may not realize it but more people than ever recognize that the 2nd Amendment is there to protect the 1st Amendment.  The strong advocates are more certain than ever, and 1st Amendment absolutist like myself believe them now.  It's not open for debate, ironically.  UK, Canada, Australia are examples of what happens when the citizens don't have a trump card in their pocket anymore.  We're not going there, sorry.  Gun deaths are horrible, I probably know more personally than most people here.  But too many were due to mental illness unaddressed.  I don't want to sound callous, because the individual situations are horrible and tragic, but no one is banning cars.  That's the argument you now have for guns, it ain't happening.

And frankly, you brought this on yourselves with your behavior the last 10 years, with your policies and your politicians.  Unmitigated failures and power grabs.

Ms Google seems to agree with many of my 'opinions' 😎

The Labor Day shootings lag what happened two months ago over the July 4th holiday, which was in fact a much smaller number than 105 shootings a year earlier.

Chicago shootings: At least 55 people shot, 8 fatally, in 4th of July weekend gun violence, CPD says

18 also shot, 4 fatally, in River North mass shooting an hour before official start of holiday weekend

CHICAGO (WLS) -- At least 55 people have been shot, eight fatally, in gun violence across the city over the Fourth of July weekend, Chicago police said.

The number is a drastic decrease from last year, which saw at least 105 people shot, including 22 killed over the same four-day holiday weekend period.

https://abc7chicago.com/post/chicago-shootings-weekend-least-19-people-shot-2-fatally-july-4th-gun-violence-police-department-says/16952731/

The shootings in Chicago are mostly down to urban gang violence.  Bad guys are whacking other bad guys, but plenty of innocent victims are killed or wounded because these guys are poor shots or target the wrong person.

And the right would have you believe that everything is out of control and that easy access to most guns and ammunition is of no consequence.

The evidence is out there.

The top five homicide rates among large population centers — those with more than a million residents — were the cities of:

Memphis, Tennessee (Shelby County)

St. Louis, Missouri (St. Louis city)

Baltimore, Maryland (Baltimore city)

Washington, DC, (District of Columbia, DC)

Birmingham, Alabama (Jefferson County).

https://usafacts.org/articles/which-cities-have-the-highest-murder-rates/

No doubt other cities have issues with gun violence because, well people have guns but the myth of good guys with guns has not helped.
