Authorities are investigating after a decomposing body was discovered inside a chained suitcase at Khlong Bang Phai Reservoir, Huay Yai, Chonburi, early on 3 September.

The grisly discovery was made at around 06.30 by members of Thailand’s national rowing team during a training session at the reservoir, which serves as a practice venue for the Rowing Association of Thailand. The large black suitcase, wrapped in chains, emitted a foul stench and preliminary checks suggest it contained what is believed to be human remains.

Lt Kasemsit Boriboonwasin, a national rower, said that over 20 athletes were training for the upcoming SEA Games when they spotted the suitcase floating near the final lane of the training area. “It was not there yesterday evening when we finished practice,” he said. “This morning, we noticed blood and other fluids leaking from the bag. We immediately dragged it to the shore.”

Police forensic teams, medical examiners and rescue volunteers from Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation attended the scene. The suitcase was retrieved from the water for a full examination to identity the victim and cause of death.

Investigators noted that the circumstances bear similarities to a suitcase murder in Ban Chang district in February 2025, when a young woman was found killed and stuffed into a bag.

Shocking Discovery: Woman’s Body Found in Suitcase Weighted with Dumbbells

Authorities in Chonburi are investigating a grisly discovery after the body of a woman, naked from the waist up, was found inside a suitcase weighted with dumbbells weights in a local reservoir. The suitcase was first spotted floating by a national athlete, prompting an urgent police response.

image.jpeg

Police Lieutenant Colonel Mintrathit Thongsai, Deputy Inspector (Investigation) at Huai Yai Police Station, reported that emergency services were called to Khlong Bang Phai Reservoir in Moo 11, Huai Yai Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi. Rescue teams from Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation and a duty doctor attended the scene immediately.

The large black fabric suitcase, branded King Safari, had multiple locks and chains, including a padlock and cable ties securing the zippers. A strong odour of decomposition emanated from inside.

When authorities cut open the suitcase, they discovered the body of an unidentified woman, approximately 30 years old, wearing only cream-coloured three-quarter trousers. She was found curled up inside the suitcase. Preliminary reports indicate the woman had been dead for around five days, although investigators were unable to immediately determine the presence of injuries on the body.

Inside the suitcase, officers also found nine dumbbell plates: one 5kg, three 2.5kg, one 1.5kg, and four 0.5kg. These are being preserved as evidence.

The suitcase measures 85cm high, 50cm wide, and 30cm deep. Authorities are now preparing to send the body to the Police Forensic Institute for a detailed post-mortem to establish the exact cause of death. Early indications suggest the woman was murdered before being placed in the suitcase and weighted down in the water to conceal the crime.

Investigators note that this case bears a striking resemblance to an earlier murder in Ban Chang earlier this year, where a woman was placed in suitcase and weighted down near a golf course. The two locations are only 14 kilometres apart, suggesting a potential link between the incidents.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area, but initial searches have not uncovered any relevant recordings. Authorities are also urging anyone with missing relatives or possible information to contact Huai Yai Police Station.

The killer went to a lot of trouble with the weights and the suitcase but then botched the throw into the river.

Water looks like mud if he had got it in deeper he would have been ok until the next drought.

It must have been very cumbersome what with a body and weights in there.

18 kgs of weights + 40 kgs minimum body weight - the killer must have waded out dragging the suitcase behind him (her?).  No wonder (s)he didn't get to deeper water.

Police Continue Investigation of Woman Found in Suitcase in Chonburi

Police are continuing the investigation of the discovery of a woman’s body, found stuffed into a suitcase and weighted down with dumbbells, at Huai Yai Reservoir, Moo 11, Huai Yai Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi. Authorities say the victim, whose nationality remains unknown, had likely been deceased for at least five days. Preliminary examinations reveal bruising around her neck.

Deputy Superintendent Nithiphum Butrwong of Huai Yai Police Station confirmed that forensic teams are en route to the Police Hospital to conduct a detailed post-mortem, aiming to gather as much information as possible about the victim and the circumstances surrounding her death. Fingerprint analysis is also underway, after initial attempts to recover prints at the scene were unsuccessful, in order to establish the victim’s identity.

Police from multiple units, including Provincial Investigation, Regional Investigation Division 2 and Huai Yai Police, continue to comb the area on the 4 September, for further evidence, including the origin of the suitcase.

Investigators are also comparing a police sketch of a suspect with previous cases in the region, including a similar murder in Ban Chang, Rayong, to determine whether there is any connection between the incidents.

Local witnesses have reported unusual activity near the reservoir, with military personnel stationed there noting that dogs were heard barking persistently three nights prior to the discovery.

Since the body was found, several individuals have come forward at Huai Yai Police Station, concerned that the deceased may be a missing relative or acquaintance, though authorities are yet to confirm any connections.

Police have urged anyone with information to come forward to assist with the investigation.

Awesome! So that means they didn´t close the investigation after a day or two. They are truly getting better.

Much better to bury the body in public land that will not be developed such as a national park.

Ideally if you have enough time burn the body and throw the remaining bones and ashes into the sea offshore.

I found that is most effective.

Usually no body= no murder charge.

Not in the West, just not convicted till the body is found
