Whatever happened to John Mayall?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

Ever since Turning Point, one just cannot forget that sound.

Also, what is the difference between OBE and an Oboe?

As if you might know?

Back in the day, just listening to his music.....

I never thought he would live to age 90.

Amazing genes, one might surmise.

Turning Point was the best I ever heard.

The Laws Must Change.....

Good?

Not Good?

What?

John Mayall at the Main Point, must have been heaven.

Were you there?

Good?

Not Good?

What?

Those days are definitely gone....

The times must surely come when....by comparison....

History just seems so much better.

Right?

Best regards,

Gamma

NOTE:  This is when California was a bit different than it might be now......

Such an incredible album, for its time, as I originally thought at that time.

Still is....

He died a long time ago, didn't he?

You know who's still alive? Robert Plant and Saving Grace.

I wanna buy you a Chevrolet

I wanna do somethin' for you now

I was at this show ...

... "John Mayall and Boz Scaggs performed together on October 14, 1972, at The Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA" ...

Scaggs opening for Mayall.  Didn't really care for Mayall, though strangely not that familiar with him.   Saw Boz Scaggs a few times afterwards, as smaller venues, (Tower theater (Upper Darby) and excellent shows.

Saw my first concert at Philly, Specturm, 10 Jan 1971 ...

... and ... Lee Michaels, that's embarrassing.

Next up was Face w/Rod Steward, then EC's (April 1971), and I was hooked on concerts.

16 yrs old and ticket prices were $5-6-7-8 back then :cheesy:

90 is pretty ripe for an old age.

He obviously lived a clean and happy life.

Yeah, or had a very resistant body. 😉 You never know.

That's just a little more than a movie back then.  We used to pop over to Manhattan from North Jersey all the time when concerts were reasonably priced.  Nowadays, I'm hearing prices of $300 for the cheap seats and up to $thousands for good seats.

And more choreography than music.

Some of the things I do miss living here, TH.   Concerts, plays, museums & such ... BUT ... the silly prices they want now, don't think I'd be attending or visiting many, if any, if still living in USA.

Besides, haven't heard anything new that interests me, and no desire to see my favorites, after they hit 60+.   Saw Clapton in BKK, silly priced, but wife should see him, at least once.  He was excellent still.

I see some of them on YT, in their 70's and you bud, time to hang it up.  Retire full time and enjoy the family.

Who was/is it and who cares?

A ghost.

The audience went wild at his final performance:

I was counting up from memory and can recall at least 20 different groups we saw in concert back then.  Some of them up to half a dozen times.  I haven't been to a live concert since I used to take the nieces to the Houston Livestock Show every year, and that must be 25+ years ago.  (George Strait and Garth Brooks)

Foghat, J Geils, Springsteen, Allman Bros, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels, Jethro Tull, Little River Band...  All from the cheap seats.

Edit:  I did have one date to see Kenny G in Houston.  If you don't get laid after a Kenny G concert, you're doing something wrong.

Amazing band and legacy never had the privilege of seeeing him and his endless changing superstar alumni. Recently saw Soft Machine with John Etheridge and Colloseum with Chris Farlowe - amazing bands and both (even though Chris needs to sit down and take a break regularly and looks like a troll) at the top of their games with bands to match them.

I saw Mayall live in Australia a few times, first in the early 70s when he had Freddie Robinson (AKA Abu Talib) on lead guitar, then in the mid 1970s when he had Hi Tide Harris on guitar and Larry Taylor on bass, next time was in the 1990s, this time Buddy Whittington was his guitar player. I had tickets to see him again in 2020 when Carolyn Wonderland was playing in his band, but that show was cancelled due to the lockdowns.

On the mid-70s Australian tour Mayall's mum came along. I was writing for a music magazine at the time so I attended the press reception at Perth airport, I met John Mayall and all the band members there, plus his mum, who was a very nice friendly lady and we had a good chat.

I was with my younger brother plus a good friend of ours, we got chatting with Hi Tide Harris and he said he didn't want to hang around his hotel room waiting for the show that night, he wanted to see some sights, so we took Hi Tide in my car out to the beach. On the way we got some beers, and we sat on the sandhills overlooking the Indian Ocean drinking beers and listening to Hi Tide telling us stories about the various bluesmen he'd met and played with.

Our good friend had a sister named Maureen who has a huge John Mayall fan but she was ill in bed and wasn't able to attend the concert that evening, so on the way taking Hi Tide back to his hotel we pulled up at our friend's house and took Hi Tide into Maureen's bedroom and told her, "Hey Maureen, we've got John Mayall's lead guitarist here and he's come to say hello and wish you well."

No more "Chicka Chicka" as dear John exited stage right last year.

I love the name Hi Tide.

That's the kind of memories that life's just made for.
