Thailand Ups Flight Delay Compensation Rules

Thailand is set to increase compensation for airline passengers facing long delays and cancellations. Under new regulations by the Civil Aviation Committee, effective November 20, 2025, passengers on domestic flights experiencing delays over five hours will receive 1,200 baht, doubling the previous amount. If a flight is canceled, the compensation rises from 1,200 baht to 1,500 baht.

These changes aim to enhance passenger rights on both domestic and international flights. Compensation can be provided through various forms, including travel credits and frequent-flyer miles. However, unavoidable events beyond the airline's control, where reasonable precautions were taken, are exempt from these rules.

The regulations also address tarmac delays, ensuring conditions such as airflow, temperature control, and toilet access on board are maintained. In case of medical emergencies, airlines must promptly assist passengers. Additionally, if a delay exceeds three hours without a take-off time, passengers should be allowed to disembark unless it's unsafe to do so.

In another development, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has introduced a regulation limiting liquids, gels, and sprays that passengers can carry. Effective April 22, items must not surpass 100 millilitres per container, aligning with international security standards. This new rule aims to enhance aviation safety, with non-compliant items subject to confiscation.

Key Takeaways

  • Thai passengers to receive higher compensation for flight issues.
  • New rules exempt airlines from compensation in some situations.
  • CAAT introduces restrictions on item quantities in airports.

Not much but better than nothing.

Don't count your chickens we will see.

You can bet there will be some spurious excuse not to pay

Pure BS. So you get travel credits or frequent-flyer miles to places you don't want to go, at the most inconvenient times, or the same place at an inflated price making the new flight more expensive than  the original. No thank you, give me the money!

I want to see AirAsia, or other discount airlines paying me compensation for a few hours delay, or flight cancellations... 😆

What's the bet you'll need Thai national ID to claim it

Not long before Covid and maybe before Brexit (can't remember) I wanted the BA midnight flight from BKK>LHR but they had stopped that and only had lunchtime flights. So I booked for my family of 4 and when we arrived at Swampy we saw a 10+ hour delay.

Ok, I got my midnight flight and a hotel for the day and a terrible ride there.... but 48 hours after landing in Blighty BA sent me the GBP equivalent of €1,200. Happy days! It was almost as much as the (return) tickets cost!

Frequent Flyer miles are good IF they are usable on any flight provided by that particular airline, and, if time-limited, are usable for at least a couple of years.

Otherwise, as you say.

In fact, they will send the money when they have the funds to do so.

You were done.  The compensation due should have been €600 per person IIRC.

My mistake. It was indeed €600 x4 = €2,400
