I also dont feel guilty about anything but how would you explain what the UK is doing to themselves if they didnt feel guilty about their past. Same with germany. And ive been to japan too, weird society

Boomers were the first generation in human history to be subjected to mass communication propaganda via movies and television. How bad must their lives be that Western expats can travel thousands of miles to set down roots within a few hundred kilometers of China, and yet still harbor feelings of Western exceptionalism which are no doubt a product of their colonial conditioning they experienced from K though 12 in their schools.  Really - weren't everyone of us taught, "China Communist, communist bad, therefore China bad."  

And then Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon messes up the status quo and implements rapprochement with China resulting in the Shanghai Communiqué which in turn opened the West up to cheap Chinese goods and made China the powerhouse of global manufacturing.  In the process the Communist Party of China pulls its population out of abject poverty and works to establish a middle class to rival any Western nation and the Western lower and middle classes benefit with inexpensive retail goods.

In the meanwhile, due to the greed of predatory capitalism on steroids in the West, the new billionaire class hoovers up as much of the West's national wealth as they can, floods their countries with cheap immigrant labor with the help of the politicians whom they have bought, and is in the process of systematically destroying their middle class.  Then some expats who can realistically no longer afford to live in their own countries head for third-world and development nations like Thailand to stretch their fixed retirement income.

But? The majority bring their cultural biases with them, including their deeply ingrained dislike, distrust, and enmity toward China and the Chinese.  Then most Western expats who have moved to Thailand collectively point an extended middle-finger to the North in the direction of China - if should a Western expat fail to do so then he must truly be a "traitor to Western values and exceptionalism."

My guess is that may be true for those expats who fit the category of "No kids, nothing left to live for, no hoping for a better future."  Then there are those of us who traveled the world during their childhood and adult lives, were exposed to multiple cultures both abroad and domestically, came to Thailand, got a job, married, developed families before retirement, and embraced the regional cultures and view China as naught but the economically successful neighbor next door in this global village.  I'm not blind.  China IS the economic and manufacturing power-house of the world.  And the West is in decay.  The US wants to be The Exceptional Nation worshiped by the world and threatening violence if all nations before it fail to bend a knee. But do wake up folks - those days are over.

China is taking its rightful place as, what did you call it Op, "leader of the world."  But China has a different worldview then the US.  The US and its post-colonial partners want to Dominate; China wants mutual cooperation in economic ventures which benefit those nations who becomes trading partners and is envisioned in partnerships such as the BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Now three quarters of the posts after mine will be posts arguing how the "Communist Party of China bad."  I expect that.  As I began with, most Western expats drag their Western biases with them, and then hold on to them for dear life.  So OP, you'll have plenty of expat AN members agreeing with you.  I'm just not one of them.  And I don't "hope that China becomes leader of the world," but on the contrary, I acknowledge that China will take the top rung on the global ladder of economic success, but unlike the United States they will not seek to be the "leader of the world," but instead economically powerful enough to bring an era of mutually beneficial global trade which empowers all members who choose to be a partner nation as well as the populations of those nations.

It's a slight limitation to think of "where I'm from" as I don't have one country that feels like home. This might be typical of other people from immigrant parentage. A few years ago, I crossed the line and have now spent more time in Thailand than any other country, and the biggest percentage of my adult life.
