A 25-year-old Russian man has surrendered to police in Phuket after being identified as the driver in a viral sex video that sparked widespread condemnation across Thailand. The case centres on explicit footage showing a Russian tourist and a Thai woman engaging in sexual activity on the back of a moving pickup truck along Phuket Bypass Road. The incident has led to arrests, strong public reaction and renewed debate about inappropriate behaviour by visitors.

 

The video first gained attention on social media earlier this week, with many residents demanding accountability. On September 25, 23-year-old Russian national Georgii was arrested at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok while attempting to flee. Later the same day, police detained the 42-year-old Thai woman seen in the footage.

 

Georgii told investigators the act had been staged, claiming he was wearing underwear and had not engaged in intercourse. The woman supported this account but alleged she was paid 1,000 baht to appear in the video and said she feared harassment if she refused. Both suspects face charges under the Criminal Law and the Computer Crimes Act, with a court appearance scheduled for September 27. Authorities have permanently banned Georgii from re-entering Thailand.

 

Public pressure quickly mounted for police to identify the driver of the black Ford pickup and the cameraman involved. On September 26, the driver, named as Alex, presented himself at Mueang Phuket Police Station in the same vehicle used in the recording. He told police he had only met Georgii four days earlier and had agreed to drive without receiving any payment.

 

Police charged Alex with conspiring to and facilitating public indecency, as well as importing explicit content into a computer system. He also faces a fine of between 400 and 1,000 baht under Section 43 of the Land Transport Act for reckless driving. Authorities have not confirmed potential penalties for the other offences.
