Ukraine could start EU membership talks in spring 2026

Featured Replies

Negotiation clusters for Ukraine’s EU accession may only start after Hungary’s parliamentary elections in April 2026, reports Deutsche Welle.

A senior EU official, speaking anonymously, noted that although Kyiv has met all the prerequisites to begin negotiations, Hungary is currently blocking the opening of the first negotiation cluster.

“At present, there is no way to overcome Hungary’s veto,” the source said, emphasizing that the decision to start negotiation clusters with a candidate country must be unanimous.

The world with a short memory.

What uses Putin as a justification for his war against the Ukraine? = The eastward expansion of the EU/NATO.

If this eastward expansion does not stop, Putin will never agree to a negotiated peace. A military solution the only option for him.

The Ukraine "fit for the EU"? Bovine droppings! Alone the corruption issue would forbid it. The Ukraine is as corrupt as Russia.

Great post. Any efforts to bring Ukraine into NATO or the EU will result in all out war. Could Europeans be so stupid? Remember when Ukraine used to be the worlds most corrupt country with a major nazi problem? Me too.

“As for Ukraine’s membership of the EU, we have never objected to this,” Putin said while in China, according to Reuters

“As for NATO, this is another issue … Our position here is well known: We consider this unacceptable for ourselves,” the Russian leader told Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

.... Putin said Russia has “nothing against” Ukraine’s wish to be a part of the European Union....

Putin Says Has 'Nothing Against' Ukraine Joining EU

June 17, 2022

"We have nothing against it. It's their sovereign decision to join economic unions or not... It's their business, the business of the Ukrainian people," Putin told Russia's annual economic showcase, the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Look at the past: Every new EU member joined NATO afterwards.

Wrong.

- Poland: NATO (1999), EU (2004)
- Czech Republic: NATO (1999), EU (2004)
- Hungary: NATO (1999), EU (2004)
- Bulgaria: NATO (2004), EU (2007)
- Romania: NATO (2004), EU (2007)
- Slovakia: NATO (2004), EU (2004)
- Slovenia: NATO (2004), EU (2004)
- Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania: NATO (2004), EU (2004)

If Ukraine joins the EU and the standard of living improves, the eastern part under Russian occupation may well want to join the gravy train.

A big problem then for Putin, especially if Russian citizens want to jump on board too.

In fact there was talk of Russia wanting to join the EU, was that back in the 1990s?

I'm sure, the war has solved both problems... 😆
