October 3, 2025Oct 3 It lacks a downtown to wander in compared to other Thai towns. So basically, udon with more traffic circles. My fave Issan in order: Ubon, Nong Khai, Korat, Buriram

To be clear I like Wayne and watched his Chiang Mai videos during COVID when I was locked out of the country for one year. I think he did a good job showing little bits and pieces in the city I wouldn't notice otherwise. From what I can tell he's an English working class guy that seems to have crashed out in his late 40s and moved to Thailand with the intent of just getting by and making YouTube videos. Doesn't seem to have any plans or money saved. Maybe he has some money coming down the line but his situation seems really precarious to me. One of his old videos showed his new apartment which was something silly like 3500 baht a month so you can get the idea of where he's at.

Where? In Isaan? It seems that's what decent apartments (obviously not fancy condos) go for in cities in Isaan. I had a quick look online at apartment rentals sites. And so what? Many people live above their means and go broke. It's precisely because he keeps his costs low that he can travel around and make Youtube videos. Still the perception is if you don't have a fancy condo or big expensive home there must be something wrong with you.

I had a quick look online at apartment rentals sites. And so what? No it was somewhere outside of Chiang Mai because that's where he's based. 3500 is basically student housing. Single room condos where everyone is kids or the working poor (like 7-11 workers). Show me what 3500 gets you anywhere in Thailand, pretty sure it's about the same quality. I don't care how he lives his life but those rooms suck and are pathetic. That wasn't his first choice nor is it anyones first choice. He used to even rent a nicer room but he downgraded. My rent is only 8000 so I'm not suggesting you live like a king or anything crazy like that but I do notice when someone is struggling like he is (been there myself so I know).
