Can't wait to get on my flight away from Pattaya after 5 weeks here

The costs are more than Australian prices in some things

I pay cheaper for a pizza in Australia

I pay cheaper for coffee in Australia

I pay cheaper for milk

Blood tests are free

I have had enough, I'm going to Vietnam next year maybe Hanoi or Da Nang

Is it true Vietnam is cheaper?

Please tell me about Da Nang

Are the people friendly ?

Have you as a Thai expat moved to Vietnam, are you considering it ?

Maybe I can look at this new place Da Nang for retirement

I need these studies.... financial,is it cheap ?

Safety ,is it safe at night ?

People,are they friendly ?

Clean street?

I found the Philippines didn't meet my needs and I went 4 times

,so now looking at Vietnam

Dude, Da Nang is Pattaya 10 years ago, Phuket 30 years ago.  Great place, daily cost of living, 60% cheaper, Air and water much cleaner. Housing much more comfortable and cleaner and newer, as well as CHEAPER.   People, locals, are friendly and will not take you for a ride.

Go for it!  I will sooner than later.

Yes. Last week I was slightly surprised when a GRAB motocy rider stopped to ask me... "You want massage, lady boom boom"

Is there a soi 6/soi Buakhao area in Da Nang?

I worked in Tra Vinh province, 190km to HCMC Airport. It took 4-5hrs to do that journey as Vietnam's infrastructure is poor.

On that long journey there were very few places for a piss stop. There was not one beautiful petrol stations every few kms like here with food, drinks, clean toilets. Stop the car at the side of the road for a piss. Infrastructure poor.

The province I stayed had one supermarket, in Tra Vinh town. It was small and basic. Before I left a small shopping mall opened. Poor infrastructure.

I've lived in Thailand many decades. Never felt any danger or threat. In Vietnam, keep your doors locked.

I like District 1 in HCMC, it has everything you get in suburbs of BKK but it's smaller. I could live in HCMC for periods but the nonstop horn-beeping would get to me.

Vietnam, and I exclude HCMC and the smaller Hanoi here, is ahead of Laos but is not even up where Thailand was in the 1980s. Yes Vietnam now has a couple of resort towns, but step away from the big cities and Vietnam is still VERY basic.

Cultural wise, Vietnam doesn't have the land of smiles attitude. It's definitely not as friendly laid back place as here. That could be partially due to the American war as they call it. Could be due to the communist setup and the fear of the police.

thank you, interesting, I do get what you are saying from what I have seen

I don't drink alcohol and certainly don't mix with the low class bogans,

Yup. I have a coupe of Ozzy pals here who like me, like to have an occasional drink (or 20^^) and when we get together we enjoy semi-intellectual conversation and don't annoy other people, be they locals or other falangs, around us by acting like retards.

Wish these types of folks were the norm instead of the standard.

Nope.  You have to do visa runs every 90 days.  They keep talking about maybe doing something someday but that sort of talk has been going on for years now.

I can kind of understand the hesitancy. They want tourists - but maybe not long-staying foreigners. Keep in mind their history with colonizers (French) and the Chinese occupations and pogrums of Vietnamese men - an occupation/landgrab that was on and off for around 8 centuries. Then of course there was the 'American War' (Vietnam War). Can't really blame the Vietnamese for not wanting to throw open the doors to long-stay foreign visitors/retirees.

You're more enigmatic than Donald J. Trump.

If Pattaya sucks so much, why do you obsess over it?

What's the real reason you're leaving?

Or are you?

Plenty of long stay foreigners doing visa runs, which the Vietnamese allow to be renewed indefinitely.  Creating a long stay visa would just be a more convenient option and atrract more of those, so I disagree with your reasoning why they are not doing it.  From what I have read, it's more a matter of priorities.

We would all live in Vietnam if we could but no retirement visa. Who wants to do border runs every 3 months?

It does make the Americans easy to spot.  They often seem to be very loud in public places for some reason.
