Transfer Visa into new passport

Featured Replies

I got my new Passport yesterday and need to transfer my 12 month visa from my previous passport.

Is anyone aware of the requirements to do so at Jomtien immigration. Just new and old passport or do they require more?

Sometimes you are asked for a slip/letter from the embassy, sort of verifying the new passport. So I went to an agent and they took care of t, I think only for 500 baht more, (They had just taken a good bit of money for helping me get the passport).

I did but it was few years ago. Fill the stamp transfer form, the usual set of copies of old and new passports incl visa and latest entry pages and at the time tm6. I would guess nowadays likely to need copy of TDAC and tm30 also but not sure.

I transferred my LTR stamp on Monday but it was in Bangkok. Needed the above but no tm30.

Impossible you cannot transfer the visa, it stays where it is, you can only transfer the extension information

Proton - I see your point but I think Oink means 'extension' when he writes 'visa'.

A new question. I've just returned from the UK where I renewed my own passport - (nice to have a blue one again!).

My extension will be in Jan 2026 before I go back to the UK in May. It seems unnnecessary to transfer the 2025 extension from the old passport as I will have a 2026 extension by then?

Agreed? Anyone?

Thanks

Your previous passport (one you got renewed) is now cancelled. So you are now registered with an invalid passport. Same goes for driving license, banks, Credit Cards, SIM cards etc.

Could cause problems down the line. That is why I have changed mine now. Old one was valid until Aug26 but new extension is due Feb26. I needed to renew passport to get 12 month extension. Plus I still want to have access to my bank account. (cannot us old one as HMPO cut corner off to cancel)

I would do it you are only delaying what you will have to do eventually. only takes a few minutes of your time.

Were the old passport copies every page? black and white?

Just to add that I had already registered my Thai accounts with my renewed passport details etc.

You have an Extension that goes beyond the expiry date of your passport?

I would get it transferred nevertheless.... old passport is cancelled and you are not able to show a current extension in the new one.

Drivers licenses and Sim cards need to be updated too???  Didn't think of that. Thanks.

Banks I knew about.

Any thing else??

When I applied for my replacement passport I had to provide copy of every page of old passport. The copies were sent to UK and returned with replacement passport, so I had all the copies I needed, which were stamped and certified as true copies by VFS Global (the UK passport agent).

I gave immigration the full set. You can bet if i did not they would ask for them.

My copies were in colour as i used my own printer/scanner so there was no advantage in doing black and white.

Heads up! I went to Land Transport Agency to change passport No. on Driving License, but they require a Residence Certificate (although address is same).

So it is off to immigration again next week, then back out to LTA next to Highway 36. Got to be there before 14:30

What a PITA, I wouldn't change it until the driving licence is due for renewal, when a residence cert is required,  I'm not going to

I use my Driving License as ID instead of passport for many things such as checking into Thai hotels. If it has the wrong passport Number it is going to ring alarm bells at immigration as the hotel is required to log you in as a guest within 24 hours of arrival.

I also use my Thai License to hire cars overseas. It needs match my passport. Invalid license my also invalidate insurance. Not worth it.

I Visit Krabi Hotels often and used my Thai DL for check in purposes but for the past couple of years they would not accept it...passport only now they tell me.

I haven't used my passport for check in in Thailand for 15 years .. and I am a regular visitor around the country.

IIRC they told me not  to bother until licences were renewed. It did provoke an issue at Big-C when I tried to get my member discount and presented the driving licence.

I kind of agree. I have 5 years left on car and cycle..but I seldom drive. I use them as a form of ID and no one has ever check the passport number. If I were driving and get pulled over....what they gonna do..lock me up?..oh wait, this isn't America.

While i am generally of the opinion that changing the passport number on your Thai licence is an unnecessary hassle ( getting the residency certificate from immigration in particular ! ) That is a good point from Oink about renting a car overseas with your Thai licence.

As an owner of both a U.K. and Thai licence using your Thai licence is definitely preferable when picking up a rental car in the U.K. and i might have to update my new passport number on my Thai license for this reason.

Why is a thai licence preferable? using a UK licence would make this a non issue

It is just easier...................the rental companies say so  -  and you don't have to get the DLVA check code.

On receipt of a U.K. licence when receiving the rental car I have had requests for proof of U.K. address ( utility bills ) with a major car rental company.

I managed to rent the car eventually but it was a bit of hassle and since then have used the Thai licence.

Much easier, no DVLA check either.

Do they check the thai licence to your passport?

I would expect them to ensure that the passport number on your Thai licence matches your current U.K. passport.
