You'll need ID/Passport (signed copies, including visa/permission to stay if foreigner), proof of address (letter from immigration or copy of house book), health certificate (normally said to be from hospital, Bandon and Thai Inter normally do it for 300 baht, mine was last month, September 2025 at Thai Inter) and old driving license(s). If you renew more than one license – motorbike and car – you might need two set of photo copies, one for each.

Corona forbid me coming to DLT DLT accepted copies for second license, don't know if grumpy lady in charge of Samui DLT does. She liked me, invited me into her office, wore a blue shirt with the Queen emblem. Please wear long pants here or you get rejected, Danish old lady was refused because her skirt was to short

October 15, 2025Oct 15 These are the latest requirements (as of last week) from Banglamung DLT for a 5 year renewal (with a one year visa or extension ie: marriage or retirement). A visit (in person) is required to make an appointment, which is usually in about 2-3 weeks. The list also has the date and time of your appointment. Cost is 505 baht for car only. Hope this clarifies most posters questions. Happy driving.

The talk is about the mandatory online test, which also applies for both renewal of a Thai drivers license and conversion of home country driver's license together with International Drivers Permit to a Thai drivers license.

I had to do the online test to renew last year .......well the wife (who can't drive) did it for me.
October 20, 2025Oct 20 Before the DLT elearning only worked if you had a Thai ID. But it now works for foreigners using a passport number. There is an English option for the videos but it is just subtltles. Had to answer 4 multiple choice questions at the end. The video runs in multiple parts and lasts about a hour. You can pause it. It tries to be humerous. Ones I had: How many people die in road accidents every day? Ans: 60 What is the safe following distance in rain? Ans: double the normal safe distance (which in the video is stated as leaving a 3 second space between the car ahead of you) The other 2 I don't remember as well. One was about what do do driving thru a curve and I think the other one was about correct braking procedure.
October 20, 2025Oct 20 I was led to believe that renewals can be done on line now, no need to go to the offices. I'll find out soon because mine expires in 3 months. Anyone got any tips?

(you can however do the e-learning at home to save watching the video at the DLT).

It depends on the DLT office as with Immigration they apply their own rules. I have held both Thai car and motor cycle licences for fifteen years and when I renewed recently had to do the online computer test at home.

This thread is specific about Koh Samui's Land Transport Office; so, what they might do at other places are not of interest. The online test – mainly that you need to see a number of videos about traffic safety – is mandatory for all renewals, it's not a "written test".
