Thai-Aussie Couple Reports Police Extortion Incident in Pattaya

Featured Replies

My thoughts also. He didn't "run" away, he just refused to pay a padded bar bill. There is a reason that many bars pay a stipend to the local cops.

I think the bigger problem is her husband not paying bar bills. If he did there would be no "extortion".

  • This happens multiple times daily across Thailand. It's how the BIB system works. I've told this story before but a friend of mine had his mountain bike stolen. He went to the BIB. BIB said hand over

How could there be a fake police officer in a police station?

Over 6000 Baht of drinks in one night. How many drinks is that?

Well it wasn't only drinks was it?

State of that marriage my god. Poor kid.

So DID he pay the bill or scoot off WITHOUT paying the bill? If he didn’t pay the bill then he’s lucky that security didn’t beat the suitcase out of him. As Mint paid the bribe it is fair to assume that the bill WASN’T paid so just be grateful there isn’t a 100,000b hospital bill.

Do you know someone we don't?

Article mentions he was "extorted" two weeks ago for trying to do a runner on an unpaid bill.

Seems he is a repeat offender.

I've paid cops directly for traffic infringements, and I've paid at the station. That's sometimes a plainclothes person standing around the corner, or sometimes a uniformed police officer in a booth. You always have the option of paying at the police station, but that's usually more expensive and very inconvenient. If you tell them you want an official ticket to pay at the police station, you can get a discount, LOL. I love Thailand and wouldn't have it any other way. I'd much rather deal with Thai cops than the Australian cops back at home, who really have a bad attitude.

Mint was stupid and could have gotten out of that pickle a lot cheaper.

"Australian cops back at home, who really have a bad attitude," I guess you mean you can't buy them off.

So far I have two thumbs down for this. My message to those are you obviously have no idea, you're denying reality or your simply trolling the thumbs down. The BIB is corrupt to the core. Here's another example. Friend got done being over the limit. His choice was handover 10k or go to court. This was Friday night so he would have been locked up for the weekend before appearing in court on the Monday. This happened. I was there.

What's your point? That's how it is over here. If he hadn't paid it would have been a weekend in jail and then 30k at the court. 10k is a great deal for a drink drive offense even if it is a bribe. Same happened to me years ago but it was 20k.

1st offence drink drive is normally a 5k fine from the courts.

You mean 2 days ago for allegedly not paying a bill, this doesn't constitute a criminal act, until proven.

The bar bill could have been a rip off in the first place between the cop and the bar. Plus;

No. 1 The policeman made the accusation of the amount of the bill.

No. 2 Do you not find it strange that as his wife said, "After Mint withdrew the cash from a nearby ATM, the man took the money without giving any receipt or documentation. Her husband was then released without an official record of any charges.

No.3 Then you say Mr henryford 1958, " her husband not paying bar bills. If he did there would be no "extortion". Which broken down in my translation means that the RTP cops are corrupt.

Whoever reads this, who believes most RTP are corrupt and especially the higher the ranks?

I remember reading worse ! A person went  to the police station to get any update on recovering his stolen vehicle.

While upstairs and looking out the window observed a person in uniform speaking to someone next to his vehicle in a park at the back of the station.

It transpired the people observed were  negotiating a sale price.

Yes, a couple of years ago I was told by a cop in walking street to pay the motorbike taxi guy who was standing across the road.

This was not the first instance, as Mint mentioned a similar event two weeks prior when a man in a police vest demanded 20,000 baht over another alleged unpaid bill.

Seriously...

Most people manage to go a lifetime without getting extorted by police, yet he managed it twice in two weeks. There's gotta be more to the story (being targeted by a bar or bar girl probably, or routinely getting drunk and refusing to pay his bill). Either way police should've made her pay his bill and release him, not "settle the matter" for a bribe.

To be fair, we don't know there actually was an unpaid bill, nor that the bill wasn't inflated. There seems to be more inflating bills and scams going on lately - I got hit with it the other day charged 50% more for my bill than the menu listed at a Cowboy bar. Will never go back to that ****hole.

Most have reverted from pushing girls to bar fine often to bar fine less and push overpriced lady drinks instead. Might work with the tourists, but you lose 100% of expats.

That, but also becareful where you drink. Not sure why he would return to a bar (or even whole area) that had him arrested before.

Not many in the Go-Go bars in LK Metro if you buy a few lady drinks 🙈

Dumb move. The next time he doesn't pay his bill, his wife won't be able to bribe him out with no charges. Also would be dumb to rat out the police or whoever handles the bribes after accepting their alleged extortion services if they are planning to continue living in Pattaya. You don't get much dumber than these two.

My sentiments exactly. Getting sideways with the local BIB could lead to a fatal motorbike crash or suicide by hanging.

They don't get involved for free you know!

I had my mountain bike stolen by a Pakistani here in Pattaya. The police failed to investigate. So the mountain bike went to Mohamed.

Terrible behavior.

Deport him back to Australia

Ban all Australians  from entering Thailand

Ban all Christians from entering Thailand .

Give Australian land back to the Aborigines .

Send Australians back to where they came from

Bring the Australian Prime Minister to Court on war Crimes charges .

Just like the Nazis

Don,t know what he was drinking or buying drinks at the bar.But is seems alot and did he disagree with the bill at the end of the night for the runner. If you don,t realise check your bills or pay at each round.I know tourist high season is now and this will happen if the farang is so drunk he does know what is around him.So alot bits missing why  this happened
