Bangkok Condo Fire: Escape Route Blamed for Doctor's Death

A doctor tragically lost his life in a Bangkok condominium fire on 9 October, with potential faults in the escape route and deficient smoke ventilation suspected as contributing factors. The blaze ignited in a 16th-floor unit of a 38-storey building on Pin Klao Road, near the Pata department store. The fire ravaged the 60-square-metre unit before firefighters successfully contained it, leaving the initial cause undetermined.

The alarm was raised through the Medical Civil Society Facebook page, reporting the doctor’s death in the fire escape while 14 others suffered injuries. Investigators found the condo's fire alarm and pressurised fan systems were fully functional and complied with emergency protocols. Despite this, troubling circumstances arose concerning the evacuation route.

The doctor's family stated that he adhered to all emergency procedures, including using a smoke mask and opting for the fire escape. However, circumstances turned perilous when the presumed safe escape route became hazardous. Suspicions suggest that an open fire escape door allowed smoke to re-enter the stairwell, converting it into a chimney-like shaft, exacerbating the smoke accumulation and leading to fatal suffocation.

Authorities have not yet determined the official cause of death. The bereaved family urges enhanced safety measures, stressing the importance of rigorous building safety systems to avert future tragedies. Investigations continue, focusing on ensuring all preventive measures are exercised and identifying underlying issues within the building's emergency protocols.

Was he living in the appartment that went ablaze, or tried resque someone in the building ?

Or would it been more or less tragic if he was not a doctor ?? 🙂

Olaf , if he had been a garbage truck driver it would have been much more tragic because a garbo provides a life saving service.

I don’t think Olaf can read !
The emergency doors in my condo were locked . There was no urgency we , (a neighbour and myself) were just checking . We immediately went to the permanence that dealt with newcomers ( probably Airbnbs) as the office was closed for lunch. The lady actually screamed at us and practically had a fit, we stood there and insisted she listened and asked security to unlock the doors! Which they did . Disgusting. I suggest everyone in a condo should check theirs. Needless to say we took it further.
