The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has defended its airstrike on Cambodian military bases, citing Article 51 of the UN Charter and describing it as a lawful act of self-defence. The operation used F-16 and Gripen jets in response to Cambodian BM-21 rocket attacks on Thai civilians. Two Thai civilians were killed, and multiple sites were hit, including a 7-Eleven store, leading to seven more deaths and numerous injuries.

The airstrike, occurring at 10.38 am on July 24, followed Cambodian attacks that began at 9.33 am in the Kap Choeng district of Surin province. The RTAF emphasized that the strikes were conducted within international law's boundaries, focusing on precision to avoid civilian casualties and responding only to legitimate threats.

Air Force spokesman AM Jakkrit Thamvichai stated that the response aimed to protect Thailand's sovereignty and ensure the safety of its citizens. The decision for airstrikes was made to neutralize military targets responsible for the initial attacks and maintain a strategic advantage.

Experts suggest that these actions could lead to increased tensions but also potentially facilitate future peace negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia. The operational readiness of the RTAF is maintained to safeguard the nation's sovereignty, according to Thamvichai.

Looking forward, Thai officials are preparing for possible diplomatic engagements with Cambodia to address the tensions and work toward a peaceful resolution. The situation remains delicate, with international observers monitoring developments closely.

Key Takeaways

  • The Thai airstrike was in response to Cambodian attacks on Thai civilians.
  • RTAF insists the operation followed international law under Article 51.
  • Experts believe future peace talks between Thailand and Cambodia are possible.

You can't shoot your Chinese rockets at another country, kill civilians, and not expect a military response.
