I wonder what happens if you politely decline to be photographed?

Happened to me about 4 years back. Apparently they just wanted pictures of themselves to send to the boss to show how hard working they are.

  • When someone says they are immigration police, at least ask politely for their immigration credentials. Why would anyone take your picture in public? You have to be wary.

Would the resolution of a phone camera be fine enough to produce a retina scan?

No idea why don't you ask the police I would say that it is indeed possible. I have a 4-year-old phone and it'll do 50 megapixel. The high-end Android phones and even the older Apple phones the cameras are quite good now

Of course I'm just speculating but I find the whole thing pretty suspicious

Chat GPT seems to think the answer is NO, not fine enough resolution for Optical Coherance Tomography or Fundus Photography.  Certainly not from a Passport photograph.

I doubt whether 'the Police' will have any idea about this, so pointless asking them.

They showed me photos they had already taken of other people: farangs as well as some Asian types. I consented to them taking my photo.

You were out in public. Consent is implied.

Why do you assume that? I believe you to be wrong.

Did the thousands of CCTV cameras ask for your consent?

You have to wonder how all these fake ID's were produced by scammers to open bank accounts for money laundering purposes.

Wait! Champers, is that you!      :omfg:

Disgusting. Papers, please.

Glad I missed that one.

Well that's 1.3 GDP. Great achievement. And expect a recession once the effects of isolationism materialise.

It's just to show that they did their job.  Thai companies are full of <deleted>.  I mean the worst of the worst narcissists and sociopaths.  Little men that morph from the ladyboy into the man between offices.  Playing the victim card then doing the bullying.

You could do your job a be told the next day that you did not do it.  Simple as that.

I worked at a learner centre and did an art class.  We did an intro to an artist than did an artwork in a similar style.  It was a great lesson and the students finished and went home.  I got back from lunch and the entire room was trashed.  Paint on the floor and brushed thrown across the tables.  Turned out the Thai ladyboy used to be the art teacher and he was a bit jealous so just trashed the room, got the maids in and then said I did it.

During my internship I was just handed a schedule and told to get on with it.  So I did.  This old lady came in and sat in half a class then left.  But other than that I was doing it myself.  The students said I was good.  The boss said I was good and she asked me to come back.  I asked If I would get a salary.'' she said no.  So I said no I am busy because I was in my final year of university.  She then gave me a bad review in all areas including ''attire'' which is funny because I wore shirt and tie every single day.  Still kept the message from praise and asking me to come back to the bad review.

It won't take long before you start taking photos of the workplace.

The way these lot operate it could be anything from testing out some ultra hi tech  chinese facial recognition equipment ,  to some big wig insisting that his misguided notion, that it will have some sort of positive effects on tourist behavior, be put into action.

Or even worse the photos are currently being digitally manipulated and he will end up in some sickly sweet smiling promotional poster for the caring Thai Immigration bureau , Or maybe behind bars in the immigration detention centre as a warning to potential overstayers

Or maybe its just some sort of game they play like spot the ugliest farang, they all throw 1000bt in the pot and who ever takes the winning pic gets the money

                It's anybody's guess

Even if you don't consent like at an airport there are cameras everywhere many with 4K motion capture and telephoto.

No guarantee to the security control, storage and use of your facial images, anywhere.

Do you go out with a full face mask dark sunglasses and baseball hat pulled down low like I do ?🤣

If they take a picture and send it to the IMM the face recognition will tell them if u have a valid visa and who u r.

Irrelevant, and they are 20 ft up in the air on a pole. If you position yourself similarly, you can probably get away with taking video.

Just to let you know, in Thailand, you might come afoul of someone putting a phone camera in their face and claiming some amendment gives you the right!

Agreed. I knew all hope was lost in Korea when I went through the gate to board and they face scanned me.

I don't disagree. Pointless being concerned about it too

I ran into some immigration fellows out and about a few years back, they had badges on a necklace and appeared legit, asked me a few questions and where I lived, asked to take my picture and then took my picture with them. Didn't ask my name or address, just what neighborhood.

face recognition, yes.

They need sh*t load of images to run against current database to see recognition ratio.

They capture tens of thousands of images of known individuals every day at ports of entry that they can use to test their systems - getting two dozen more on the streets of Pattaya would add nothing to the process.

Probably taken to show theyre doing their job.

My Mrs is always taking pics when out inspecting or away on conferences.

Most get posted on their work line group or like yesterdays special parade on her personal Facebook.

Pics posted on the work line group are used as proof to auditors they performed the tasks.

In US airports there is almost always now a *face scan at security check, AND THEN ANOTHER ONE at the boarding gate sometimes on international flights.  Also there are airports where if you can show state ID like driving license you don't even need to show boarding pass. Everything  now being tracked and cross referenced. What I hear is coming will be even more intrusive.

*They say the security  face scan "optional" and that the facial scans are not stored  long term then why take them at all? How long will it take to if you decline?
