Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister, Suchart Chomklin, announced that investigations revealed no foreign encroachment on forest land in Koh Pha Ngan. Concerns were raised by locals alleging that Israeli nationals used Thai nominees to illegally obtain seaside land and encroach on protected areas. Suchart confirmed no evidence of forest land occupation by foreigners, though other legal issues will be addressed.

These allegations emerged from locals on the island worried that Israeli activities were creating unauthorized party zones and living spaces. The Ban Sri Thanu community was labeled a “second Tel Aviv,” with reports of an increasing Jewish presence, centered around a Chabad centre. This community features various businesses facilitating Israeli relocation and an international school with a predominantly Israeli student body.

In response to these concerns, Suchart directed a multi-departmental inspection involving the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The investigation included the Royal Forest Department, Department of National Parks, and Department of Lands. The examination found no evidence of marine or hotel operations intruding on national park areas, though regulatory enforcement on disturbances continues.

This scrutiny is not unprecedented; similar concerns were recorded in the Pai district of Mae Hong Son province. There, residents had previously pushed for an assessment of activities linked to the Chabad of Pai, highlighting issues like persistent noise from gatherings. These cases indicate ongoing tensions regarding foreign ownership and influence within localized Thai communities.

Looking forward, authorities intend to maintain vigilant oversight of foreign activities in these areas to ensure compliance with Thai laws. Suchart emphasized that any legal disruptions caused by foreigners would be met with appropriate legal action. This proactive stance aims to balance community concerns with lawful foreign engagement in local economies.

Key Takeaways

  • Investigations revealed no forest land encroachment by foreigners on Koh Pha Ngan.
  • Allegations and previous, similar cases highlight tensions over foreign influence.
  • Thai authorities are committed to ongoing monitoring and enforcement of laws.
