Transferring Canadian $ - The SCB BIC code does not work

Featured Replies

SCB says use SICOTHBK. ( I phoned SCB to confirm this). CIBC offers 2 options: SICOTHBKXXX and SICOTHBKTSD.  I have never had a problem for the past 15 years. Now, neither works, for the past 5 months. Any advice? CIBC used to offer a transfer option to WISE Canada. But not any more.

SICOTHBKXXX

is what I use - as recently as last week for a Swift payment.

SICOTHBKXXX is OK. XXX just stands for a non specified branch number.

As the account number starts with the three digit branch number it's irrelevant.

International transfers go through some central office at SCB and money will find it's way within SCB.

SICO = Siam Commercial ...

Thanks guys.  my middle name is missing when i look at my account at CIBC and compare it to my account name at SCB. CIBC says its there, in their records. I bet this  is their fault. I am going to change my receiving bank of record, at Services Canada, from CIBC to my Wise account, collect 3 receipts there, before transferring to SCB. (SCB charges 500 baht per transaction)

Swift was initially 8 character codes but time brought about the 11 character code with the last 3 characters being the branch.

However Thailand  only  uses the 11 character for business banking and it is still 8 for retail banking. External institutions now usually require the full 11 characters so the XXX is added to the code which puts it to head office and funds distributed from there.

Glad to see a resolution and it was not code related.

I tried it again, last week, , for the 8 time. did not work. still no word from my CIBC branch about changing my name to exactly that of my SCB account. to add to my woes, CIBC has cancelled my credit card for logging on. This means  my pension access is frozen. crazy.

I feel for the OP.

As a Canadian in receipt of OAS and CPP,  who is no longer a Canadian resident, it can be a major trial to keep access to one's Canadian Bank account given the collateral "damage " from Canadian bank's increasing measures to deal with scammers.

I am just returning from a visit to Canada where I have opened new accounts with RBC and ScotiaBank and transferred most my funds frim BMO to those two banks.  I plan to close my BMO account.

Why? I can no longer, when outside of Canada, easily access my BMO account   hence my reason for the change.  I have yet to test the ease of transferring money out of RBC and Scotiabank ( to Thailand) but hope to do so in next week or so to do a test transfer.

My wife uses CIBC and is able to access that account from outside of Canada as CIBC accpts a legit VOIP voice number for account access verification.  However BMO won't accept VOIP ( Canadian)  numbers for voice nor for sms verification. BMO also won't send voice nor SMS verification to Thai phone numbers. Plus BMO won't allow download of their smartphone app to an Android phone that is not North American registered in Google Play Store.  Scotiabank and RBC don't have that Google Playstore limitation and do allow download and install of their banking apps to Thailand registered Google Playstore.

The advantage of BMO, that I will miss, is that it was very easy and inexpensive, with BMO to transfer money to Wise as a Bill Payment.  From Wise I have easily transferred money to Bangkok Bank account.

I am curious about the experience of others with Canadian bank accounts in this aspect of accessing their Canadian account from Thailand and transferring their funds to Thailand.

excuse me going on at length, but I'd regard this as one of the most important pieces of advice you'll get, relating to         non- resident Canadians with banks back home. the past 6 months' of  hell, since my wife passed away, was due to  2 issues. #1 was having a joint account, so as to receive our pensions. I am still unable to resolve if the reason my transfers get 'bounced' because it was renamed to my name  only, by the Estate division of the bank. The 2nd issue  is due to the fact that my late wife was the primary Visa card holder. I was the secondary holder. NEVER arrange your affairs this way. At this time, i am dealing with the Estate Division, for a 2nd time, 6 months later. I have to apply to cancel our existing credit cards and apply for a new card in my name. It seems easy. but I will not get my new card until December, Until then, I cannot log on to online banking with either of our ''old'' card numbers. that means  I continue to be unable to access my funds. thanks for reading this! I hope it helps another Canuck from avoiding what I've gone through. peace out

I successfully was able to access both my new RBC and new Scotiabank accounts from Thailand.

My plan is still to close my BMO account (where access to my BMO account from Thailand is exceptionally difficult). I need to wait first to confirm my CPP and OAS no longer go to my BMO account (but rather to my Scotiabank account) before I close the BMO account.

It can be difficult at times, as a Canadian expat living in Thailand (as a Thailand resident, and not a Canadian resident), to continue to manage one's Canadian assets.
