Thailand will experience a spectacular celestial event on November 5, 2025, coinciding with the Loy Krathong festival. The Super Full Moon, the closest the moon will be to Earth this year, will be visible in the sky. The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) invites the public to observe the event at five observation points nationwide for free.

The moon will be only 356,966 kilometers away from Earth, appearing larger and brighter than usual. This astronomical phenomenon occurs due to the moon’s elliptical orbit, reaching its nearest point, or perigee, with an average distance of 357,000 kilometers from Earth. Loy Krathong participants can enjoy the visual treat as the moon rises at around 5:30 p.m. and remains visible throughout the night.

To facilitate public viewing, NARIT will set up telescopes at five locations: Sirindhorn Astronomical Park in Chiang Mai, and observatories in Chachoengsao, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Songkhla. These events are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., allowing an excellent opportunity for enthusiasts to witness the supermoon.

In addition to the astronomical event, a ceremony will honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, acknowledging her significant contributions to the nation. Attendees are encouraged to wear respectful, muted colors suitable for the occasion.

As the Super Full Moon enhances the Loy Krathong festival, experts and enthusiasts alike eagerly anticipate this conjunction of cultural and natural spectacle. Looking forward, NARIT continues to promote public interest in astronomy through such engagements. This event not only fosters appreciation for celestial phenomena but also strengthens cultural traditions linked to the lunar cycle.

Key Takeaways

  • The Super Full Moon will be visible on Loy Krathong Night, November 5, 2025.
  • NARIT is hosting free public viewings at five locations across Thailand.
  • Attendees are advised to dress in respectful attire for the accompanying ceremony.

Will it be cloudy?

Will it be cloudy,  most likely as usual when an exciting celestial event occurs.

50/50 chance

Well it is always held on the first full moon in November, this time its just a bit closer.....:coffee1:

These super moons, blood & blue moons are silly boring, and not much different than all the other months.   Still raining here, so maybe not visible.   Other places, the smog may be an issue, though might give it a nice tint, as the smog does during sunrise/set lots of times :cheesy:

I can make my own Super Moon with my Super Flashlight ...

Can only hope so, and rain for the firecrackers.

I thought all the major Buddhist events coincided with a full moon?

Of course you can.

Cool, I hope its clear. Looks like they arent getting my money if the border isnt open.

I'm surprise to hear that any type of festivities will take place at all owing to the mourning period

the country has declared,

In CM, such festivals were cancelled very recently owing to the same reason.

Loy Krathong is always held on a full moon, not coinciding with it.

Again, it is the full moon following the end of the Thai lent, which is also on a full moon day.

Look at the Chinese lunar calendar which the Thais use, that will tell you.

Next year on Wednesday, November 25, 2026 the Loy Krathong festival is expected to line up again with a supermoon.

It seems you don't know what a blue moon is,

It seems you are mistaken, though I may be corrected, during the next volcanic eruption, if I happen to be nearby :coffee1:

Your words-"These super moons, blood & blue moons are silly boring, and not much different than all the other months. ".  So blue moons are not much different than any other month. No blue moons in 2025, one  last year, one next year, the next one after that is 2028 and the next after that is 2031. Not exacttly what I would classify as boring and much the same as every month. 2037 is an outlier with two in one year after a 3 year break from the previous in 2034,  As I said you obviously don't know what a blue moon is. Blue moon-second full moon in a single month. Definitely a rare occasion hence the saying once in a blue moon.

Super full moon is the point you seem to have missed.

It's a moon ... seeing an extra 'cycle' isn't something I'm going to schedule to see = boring.  So boring, I've seen quite a few, and didn't even notice, or cared, they were 'blue' moons.  And I'm one that enjoys celestial things, having telescopes in the past, and not just to look at my neighbors.

Already been approximately 845 moon cycles since I've been born, so seeing 3 more, maybe, isn't excitement in my world.  I don't even bother with meteor showers any more, as seen my fill of.  Seems al the eclipses of late, have been during rainy season, and skies overcast.

Of course, if I was on my dying bed ... I may utter ... "If only could see one more blue moon".   Though with some of the luck I have, might be that moon.   If I live to see the one in 2037, then that one might be special, as I'll be 82/83 yrs old.

So enjoy you blue moon, even give a howl or 3, if moved to do so :coffee1:

You really should assume someone's ignorance, simply because their opinion differs from yours.  So again, you were 'incorrect'.

Something to hold you over while you wait, for the next one, from my collection of snaps of ...
