Whilst I agree with the above, the passport application guidelines state that:-

You can’t travel with it after you’ve applied for a new one - but you will be able to keep your existing passport for ID purposes.

Oh.

So maybe they've put me in a position where I have no choice but stay and hope for the best? I wonder if mine would even count, considering it's not on their system (according to the web chat guy)

Thought I'd give you all an update: All's well that ends well. I arrived back in Bangkok last night after a trip to Laos with a shiny new 60-day stamp in a shiny new passport. It was an expensive

This adds a bit of clarity.     AsparrownamedJack Member  28

  • VFS don't/shouldn't have the old/current passport, he should have it.  And it won't have been physically cancelled so no issue to travel to the UK.

I have traveled in the past on an old passport whilst waiting for the new one to arrive  -  but that was a land border with Cambodia.

If you intend to travel back to the UK I thing you will be OK.

I also think you will be OK if you took the old passport to Immigration, cleared the overstay and requested a further extension (if that is possible).

In 2019 a washed my passport in the washing machine. I posted about it here.

I went back to Canada for a month, mostly just killing time and swiping on Tinder while waiting for a new passport. Once I was back in Thailand, I started the dating rotation. By the third date, I'd met the woman who is now my wife. Things were going well for a few months until suddenly, COVID hit, and the entire country was about to lock down. Instead of letting me fly home to Canada, my now-wife dragged me to the amphur, slipped someone some cash, and got a rush-order marriage certificate. Since she'd converted from Buddhist to Christian a few years earlier, I'm pretty sure she thanked the Almighty for delivering a global plague just so she could finally secure a farang husband.

My point is: Maybe a trip to the UK could be a good idea, as you might end up with a brand new family... all thanks to a bureaucratic loophole or a global disaster.

Nobody knows about the application.  Even if it had gone through properly the passport is only cancelled on the UK system.  That information is not automatically shared unless the passport is declared stolen.  So nobody would have a clue until you rocked up at the UK border.

And potentially have a problem at the UK border?

Not really.  You cannot be denied entry and have a reasonable story.  Better than hanging around here.

No. you are British and don't need a 'live' passport to enter.

Same as a Thai returning to Thailand

As a British citizen you have the right to enter the UK, even without a passport, they are not going to refuse entry

and as an added note if yoiur application never reached the passport office then your passport has not been cancelled

Whilst I agree with the above, the passport application guidelines state that:-

Making your application

You must apply in person. If you’re unable to, someone else can go on your behalf. You must bring photo ID with you.

Bring original supporting documents and a colour photocopy of each one. The original documents will be returned to you.

You must also bring your current passport with you when you apply, and a full colour photocopy of the entire passport (every page including blank pages).

You can’t travel with it after you’ve applied for a new one - but you will be able to keep your existing passport for ID purposes.

Exactly.

More of an issue if they suddenly find it !  😊

Learning point...............check  (a few days after submission) for receipt of an email confirming acceptance of the application - and also  that the credit payment has been taken. Then you know that the process is underway.

I can't help but feel that I will be on a flight to the UK in the next few days or so.

If you are currently in overstay suggest this is best option unless of course you obtain update from HMPO very soon.

UK folk really hard done by with their pp renewal process.

Don't understand why some countries make it so difficult.

It's been smooth for me so far, the problem is the process isn't clear, i.e VFS email to say application sent, HMPO email to say application received, Payment taken, all in the first couple days

I can?

Would that be through VFS / HMPO again?

Not if you're now on overstay, I don't think.  But Thai Immigration will issue an Extension of Stay for the category you qualify for, until the date your passport expires.

And probably hundreds go through with no problem,  you  only see a problematic one on here.

I have read many threads re problems with UK pp renewal.

Even if it was smooth the process is ridiculous.

Appointment with VFS etc.

Consider AU as one example by way of contrast.

Application can be done completely online.

You don't even send current pp as part of application.

Photo page only.

You post application to Oz embassy bangkok. Payment cleared same day it land at embassy.

New pp mailed to your address in Thailand. Approx 20 days including mail time.

True it is over complicated but sending a passport in the post seems risky, but i guess if it goes missing they just send another one

IMO if it can be couriered to VfS it can be couriered to your home address.

Hong Kong managed that under  the previous system.

Likely Australia is glad to see the back of some people 🙂

Not every person from the UK is a member of AseanNow or Thaivisa as it was before, I've met countless people that aren't, so a few negative reports on pp renewal are a drop in the ocean compared to the positive ones.

Fail to see any sense in what you are typing.

Fact is UK are the stand out odd ball for pp renewal.

For those located well outside of Bangkok or CM it makes process crazy given you deal with VFS.

Need to make an appointment etc.

Some folks get around that by using agents.

I outlined the process that AU use.

If you had dealt with more streamlined process you may understand why UK pp comes up so often in the threads concerning pp renewal.

So many threads with first hand bad experience from VFS or HMOP.

I wonder what OP opinion would be.

Well, they've called a couple of times today so Kudos to them for that.

Apparently my name wasn't clear on the app so, - it appears - they thought they'd just leave it there gathering dust.

Having to sort out payment now which I don't understand since I've already given the details.

I spoke to one lady about it who would not continue the call because the address didn't match - despite one chap earlier confirming it was OK. I've a hunch the lady is being a tad anal over the difference between 'Moo' and 'Village' on the application, despite it being bindingly obvious it's correct

I have a headache

  • Author

It turns out they have a scanner that scans details on app forms and it's evidently unreliable.

And I still don't know why they didn't let me know. My brain is too fried to think to ask these things now.

An example of some of the numerous hurdles I had to jump today:

One particular call was cut short because I could not give the correct address. This is despite several other people having already confirmed the address with me.

On a later call with another lady who seemed quite smart, it seemed the issue was down to a discrepancy with my house number. The number is 1/2 but the person I was talking to had 112 on her screen.

You should get an email from the "Passport Office" there's a feedback link included

You can still get an extension for the remaining time left on your passport.   But it is ridiculous if HMPO have really lost the application.

would depend on what visa and what permission to stay stamp he is on.

Yes entirely dependent on the extension (visas cannot be extended).
