90-day non immigrant visa extension

Featured Replies

I’m in Thailand on a 90-day non immigrant visa. I understand I can get a 30-day extension when the 90 days end. Can I just go to Immigration, fill out the application, pay the 1,800 baht (or was it 1,900 baht?) and that’s it? Do I need to bring any additional documents, like proof of funds, or proof of income?

One last question. I entered Thailand on September 28, which means my 90 days end on December 26. Will Immigration be open then? I’m in Hua Hin, by the way.

I think its 1900, unless of course your on Koh Chang then they will rip you off and charge 2,300b,  and you may need a letter/phone number from your 'landlord..

No, you cannot get a 30 day extension to a non-O visa.  The 30 day extension is a tourist extension, that is only available to tourist entries (tourist visa, visa exempt).

If you enter a non-O visa, there are only 2 extension you can apply for.

1) A 1-year extension based on the same reason your non-O visa was based on (retirement, marriage, etc)

2) A 60-day "visiting Thai family" extension if you have a Thai spouse or half-Thai child

How long would you want to stay in Thailand?

Arrived here end of September, staying until the end of March. I had done the 90 day non immigrant because I was told I could get a 30-day extension, which would mean I wouldn’t have to get out of the country and come back on/around December 26, which is full-on holiday season.

Now I have no choice, though. Will go to Vientiane on December 26, spend the night and come back on December 27, get a 60-day visa exempt and the get a 30-day extension at the end of February. That is possible, right?

Do you know if you also get the 60-day visa exempt if you cross a land border? I’m thinking of taking the train from Bangkok to Vientiane, because I love to travel by train and I hate flying. I know it’s just a one-hour hop by plane, but I avoid flying like the plague if I possibly can.

Yes, visa exempt is 60 days at any entry point.

Nong Khai is a little problematic as they may require you to stay more than overnight in Laos, and have been known to refuse border bouncers entry at all telling them to fly back but with any luck you'll get away with it.

You could always get a new non-O in Vientiane but your timing is far from ideal as the Embassy will be closed from the 31st for the rest of that week.  You could always go earlier as you don't need to wait till the 26th, whenever you go out your current visa/permission is effectively killed off.

There are agents doing border runs to Vientiane who might be able to "facilitate" your re-entry.

Thanks for the info. Do you know of any better options (other than Vientiane) to do this from Hua Hin?

That part about the agents sounds interesting. How does that work exactly?

Savannakhet is another option, but not much in it and Vientiane is more fun to be in for a few days.

Agents are taking you by minibus from Bangkok, across the order and straight back again.  Their connections ensure no issues on returning.  If you make your own way to the border you can arrange to meet them there.  "Bangkok Buddy" is one.

Ah.  I may do the same situation if I just decide to stay a bit longer

Be aware that border bounce not as simple as previously.

You may need to spend nights in eg Laos unless agent border run company used.

Closed borders with Cambodia has made things difficult..

Depending on where you are located a flight using safe entry agent may be preferred option.

@Tod Daniels any recent reports re land border entry as OP plans?

Border bounce companies can get their customers out and back without any issues at the Lao borders,

but

I agree with you that Nong Khai may be problematic for the O/P if he's thinking about bouncing himself or and back there.

It's anyone's guess what the crossing guard will tell him as far as how long he had to stay out of Thailand (usually a couple days) or if they tell him, he can get out but has to fly back.

Sanannakhet should be okay if he's bouncing himself.

As he says he's in Hua Hin he should look into a company down there that takes people to the burns Burma border from the Ranong pier.

I don't know the name of the company but I know there is one that specializes in taking people from Hua Hin down there and back.

I will look into that option, since Ranong is the closest to Hua Hin by far.

I think I found them, they’re called Lime Tour, they do a border run to Myanmar. It’s a bit pricy, but you’re done in one day, leave Hua Hin at 07:30, return at 20:30. I think that would be the best option for me.

Thanks again!

Believe it or not I almost said I think their name is a fruit 🙂

At the moment you can get a 60-day visa exempt. In Thailand things change fast and until end of December this can also change and they can go back to 30 days. Better to have plan B.

If it changes from 60-day exempt to 30-day exempt (which I don’t expect on such short notice), I will have to cross the border where there is a Thai consulate and then apply for a 60-day tourist visa, or a 90-day non immigrant. How’s that for a plan B?

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has launched a nationwide crackdown on foreigners repeatedly entering Thailand under visa-free exemptions, aiming to shut down “visa runs” being used as cover for illegal activity, including cybercrime and human trafficking.
